Chop chop!

1169011004-sc-830

I’ve been having a look around the Cooking and Recipes category in Yahoo!7 Answers this week and have been very inspired to improve my culinary skills. It’s a great place to go in search of cooking hints and meal ideas.

I came across a few recipes for old favourites while I was flicking through the questions and answers, plus one question asking for the best chocolate cake ever which I’ll be doing some of my own research on!

Even though I personally get sidetracked by the sweets there are plenty of ideas and advice about cooking savoury meals, from recipes to cooking methods to suggestions for leftover supplies. I really liked the question posted about the strangest dish ever – there were some stomach turning answers.

The advice I think I will benefit from the most is how to chop onions without crying. I am going to try all the different answers until I find the one that works for me!

Comets, stars and playing in cyberspace

1168928678-sc-824

A blazing fireball streaks across the heavens, hundreds of thousands of kilometres away but visible to the naked eye even in the daylight. “What on earth is that?” You hear people ask. Where else would you go to find the right information but Yahoo!7 Answers? There have been numerous questions about this rare event over the past few days – and lots of answers!

The glitz and glamour of the Golden Globes has also drawn user attention… many are dismayed at their favourite star missing out on an award and there is a great deal of discussion about which of the nominated films are worth seeing.

From the big screen to the small, another very hot topic is the three top electronic gaming products, and the debate continues over which device is the best one to have in your living room. Answers is a great forum to get help when the machines aren’t working properly – instead of waiting on the end of a phone line you can get helpful advice from all over the world and be back up and running in minutes.

See you soon!

The President of India on Answers

1168837888-sc-820

If a politician’s role is to listen to and act on the views of the people then the President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam is on the right track – he recently posted a question on Answers asking the whole world what they think would be a solution to the terrible problem of terrorism.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam is one of the most distinguished scientists in India, having written several books and received honorary doctorates from 30 universities and institutions. His focus is on igniting young minds for national development and transforming India into a developed nation by 2020. His question “What should we do to free our planet from terrorism?”has already been answered by hundreds of users, including several other Indian luminaries.

This is an amazing opportunity to have your opinion viewed by a world leader. Coming up with solutions to free the planet from terrorism isn’t an easy task, but if you answer Dr Kalam’s questions perhaps your answer could inspire a turning point towards world peace!

A busy week on Answers…

It has been another busy week here on Answers with several hot topics surfacing. We even had our own moment in the spotlight with an article published in several countries featuring the site’s best user Richard Marchal.

The week started off with the announcement of young Bindi Irwin’s US tour, where she appeared on several talk shows and promoted Australian tourism. Her scarily professional demeanour and amazing confidence have many Answers users wondering about and discussing her long term happiness.

There has been much talk on Answers of US President George W Bush’s announcement that he will be sending a further 21 thousand US troops into the strife torn Iraq. Answers community members certainly get fired up on this topic!

In sport English superstar David Beckham made the suprising announcement that he has signed to play with American football (that’s soccer in our language) team LA Galaxy, for what seems to be a mind boggling amount of money. So are we soon to see snaps of his wife Posh gadding about Hollywood with Paris Hilton? Only time will tell.

Speaking of celebrities, time is running out to answer actor Leonardo Dicaprio’s question. The actor, who is currently promoting his film Blood Diamond, is very passionate about environmental issues and wants to hear from you about simple ways to reduce global warming.

I hope you enjoy your weekend – have fun on Answers!

Secret language of Answers

1168495170-sc-797

First thing’s first – there is NO secret language of Answers! To ask a good question you simply adhere to the Community Guidelines, use good punctuation and grammar and a bit of common sense.

Last week Clea blogged about why your question may have been deleted and we received a number of comments that I would like to address by giving a bit of advice on best practise. It may sound blatantly obvious, but well-written, thoughtful questions tend to receive well-written, thoughtful answers.

An example of a GOOD question is:
What should Australian teams do when the Kiwis are doing their haka? Make fun of it or show respect?
Notice that the responses tend to be written clearly, in a friendly, helpful tone, with great perfect spelling and punctuation.

An example of a BAD question is:
if i like a girl ho do i know if she likes me that way?
There was only one answer (which was thankfully polite) and I think it was very lucky to get that.

When you look at similar poorly written questions, you’ll notice that the answers are often equally baffling and incoherent. They may be legitimate questions but because they are very generalised, or with poor spelling and grammar, they are almost destined to generate poorly-written answers or none at all. Don’t forget that there’s a spell-checker just above the box where you type your question so take a few extra seconds to make sure your question is clear and understandable.

And remember, YOU play a key part in choosing best answers and giving the best answers more prominence, so cast your votes and rate the best answers. You will even pick up points just for doing it.

If you want to see an example of a brilliant answerer, check out morgan (no, he’s not an Aussie but we won’t hold that against him!), who has managed to maintain an incredible 90% of his answers judged as Best Answer. Wow!

Please take a couple of minutes to read over the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service (which you signed up for when you started using Answers), but here are two simple guidelines to remember: no profanity and no chatting. Please don’t swear as we’ve had to delete otherwise legitimate Q&As because profanity was slipped in.

Also, Answers is NOT a chat site or personals message board – it is a Q&A site where human knowledge can be shared. Therefore, questions like “Does my pic/avatar look hot?”, “Who wants to chat on IM?”, “What should I eat now?” and “Who wants a date with a cute Brisbane guy?” will be removed. If you want to chat, we recommend the Yahoo!7 Message Boards or Messenger.

Sometimes abuse escapes deletion and appears on the site. If you see a post which contravenes the guidelines, please help us by:

1) Not answering the question – questions with no answers are deleted automatically; and

2) Clicking on the “Report Abuse” link below the question – our customer care department will review all reports received and if there has been a violation of the community guidelines, appropriate action will be taken. Users will be suspended for continual abusive or otherwise inappropriate posts.

This may seem a little overwhelming, but it is just good old common sense! Happy asking and answering…

Been around the world a couple of times or maybe more…

Today the spotlight is on Travel!

Australians are well known for their propensity to journey to far flung corners of the globe, and many are now visiting Yahoo!7 Answers for tips and advice before they take off for their next adventure. Users have posted questions about their impending travels to Russia, to little known towns in Germany, to exotic and distant locations such as Guam and Tunisia and to our near neighbours New Zealand and Bali.

There is many a great adventure to be had in our own backyard – Australia has diverse destinations and often Answers users simply want to know where they can go just to get out of town for the weekend. It’s great to scroll through the various replies to get ideas for your next holiday.

Answers has lots of questions from people requesting advice before they travel, seeking to read about others’ experiences, asking for tips on travelling on a budget and even wondering how much luggage to take. If you’re about to set off somewhere why not post a query of your own before you leave?

It has been at least six months since I got on a plane and reading all those travel questions is making my feet itch! Perhaps Peru would be fun…

Hot topics

It’s always interesting to see the recurring subjects that pop up in Yahoo!7 Answers each week. The number one topic at the moment is definitely Saddam Hussein, with users posting many questions asking for opinions about his recent execution.

Although the Saddam issue is pretty heavy stuff, this week’s other hot topics are definitely more light hearted and have been focused on entertainment issues such as the axing of the popular show The OC. It seems opinion is divided over whether the demise of the TV drama series is a tragedy or reason to celebrate! There are also lots of questions at the moment seeking theories about the seventh and final Harry Potter book, which is yet to even have a confirmed release date.

Sport has been very high on the list of new questions too over the past week – the Australian Open tennis hype has started up as the Ashes cricket hype is finally dying down, however there has been some amusing gossip about bowler Brett Lee doing the rounds lately… check it out!

Farewell to a cricketing great

This week is your last chance to share your thoughts on cricket with Australian cricketing great Justin Langer!

Over the past two months the Perth born opening batsman has been posting questions on Yahoo!7 Answers, asking about the rules of cricket and seeking users’ predictions for the 2006/7 Ashes. He also took time out from preparations for the Ashes to answer cricketing questions and share his opinions on the game.

With more than 7500 runs and 105 Test matches under his belt, Justin announced his retirement from Test cricket during the recent Ashes tournament, departing alongside fellow veterans Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne after the Australian team secured a 5-0 victory over England on January 5th. As well as retiring from cricket he will soon be bidding the Answers community farewell – so if you’re a cricket fan answer Justin’s question on Australia’s most memorable Test victory before it’s too late!

The first week of the new year

Monday kicked off a brand new year, one we are very excited about here at Yahoo!7. We will be very busy over the next 12 months implementing updates and improvements to our sites, particularly Yahoo!7 Answers.

January is a time for planning and setting goals, and many of our community members have been doing just that, posting questions about new year’s resolutions. From quitting smoking to losing weight, making personal improvements has been a recurring theme since the clocks rang in the start of 2007.

This week has also seen the fabulous final Test of the 2006/7 Ashes. What an unforgettable finish for retiring players Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Justin Langer, who were part of Australia’s incredible 5-0 victory over England. I’m sure the English team will be making their fare share of resolutions after their disappointing performance.

There has been much talk too about Saddam Hussein, with many users turning to Answers for more information after it was revealed that the former Iraqi dictator was executed over the weekend – a momentous event no matter how you look at it.

My resolution is to blog more than ever in 2007, so keep an eye on this page!

Help! Why was my question deleted?

This question comes up regularly – users can feel very frustrated when they post a question on Yahoo!7 Answers only to have it very quickly removed. There are a number of reasons why a question is removed from Yahoo!7 Answers, and these are all explained in the Community Guidelines, which you agree to abide by when you become a member.

One of the most common causes of postings being removed is that they are not phrased in the form of an actual question – for example nobody could really give an answer to the statement “I’ve had enough?” so it will be removed from the site. Simply posting “!!!!!!Help!!!!!!?” is also not really a question and therefore is a breach of the community guidelines.

We aim to make Yahoo!7 Answers a site that can be used by a range of people from all walks of life, so questions that are deemed to be offensive or to contain adult content or swear words will be deleted by our Customer Care officers. This is so that all members can enjoy using Answers without feeling that they are being insulted or offended.

Lastly, Answers is not a chat site, so questions like “How are you today?“, “Do you like my avatar?” and “Please email me?” won’t last very long! You can set up a chat option on your profile page if you’d like to communicate with other users.

If you feel your question has been removed wrongly check the Community Guidelines and then email us at au-answers-abuse@cc.yahoo-inc.com and we’ll do our best to respond. You can also notify us of poor quality postings by using the Report Abuse button that is clearly visible after each question and answer.
