Job hunting – it’s a jungle out there!

Countless people start their careers behind a fast food counter – it’s good training!

The process of getting a job can be daunting. It takes a lot of time to find something that interests you and to get your resume in tip top shape, highlighting the best parts of your experience and keeping those small indiscretions out of the spotlight without lying. Sometimes the hardest thing is picking up the phone to enquire about a positionin the first place, but there’s no avoiding it if you really want to stand out and make it to the next stage.

Aren’t job interviews nerve wracking! If you’re not sure exactly what the people interviewing you are after it can be difficult to be prepared and have some good answers ready. If nothing else, ensure you look presentable and address the people you meet respectfully until they invite you to do otherwise. Do some background research on the company and have some questions of your own prepared.

Once you’re out in the working world it doesn’t always go according to plan, and issues come up with unfair employers, horrible co-workers or dealing with the strains of shift work. You might find that your new position doesn’t live up to your career expectations and often within no time at all you’re daydreaming about your next career change! In those situations it is always best to carefully consider your options before making rash decisions – and if you’re ever wondering about other people’s occupations you can usually find out on Answers!

Have you tried using search on Answers?

henever anyone asks me about Yahoo!7 Answers, I immediately focus on the aspects of asking and answering questions, but it’s also important to highlight the millions of questions and answers that you can readily search for at any given moment.

For example, search is a great way to see whether your question has already been asked and answered in the past. Running a quick search before asking a common question like “why is the sky blue?” can help keep repetitious content to a minimum.

I also find that using search to find open questions to answer makes my time spent on Answers feel more worthwhile. I use our Advanced Search and choose Open Questions under the “question status” section to find topics to my liking such as literature or zoology. Advanced Search can also be used to search a specific category or a particular timeframe. For example, I could restrict my search to find only open questions in the Cycling section if I wanted to answer questions specifically about bikes.

While many longtime Answerers are probably familiar with many of these uses of search in Answers, there are still some secrets you may not be familiar with. For example, some of you have expressed the desire to sort by “Date” and by “Number of Answers.” While we have plans to make this easier in the future, the ability to apply these sorting options to search results currently exists. As a special treat to our blog readers, here are a couple secret tricks that let you do this:

To sort by date, do a search and then click in the address bar of your browser. Add this to the text to the end of the URL “&s=-date” and hit Enter. Here is an example of a search on “Spider-Man” sorted by the most recently asked questions:

To sort by number of answers, do a search and then click in the address bar of your browser. Add this text to the end of the URL “&s=-answer_count” and then hit Enter. Here is an example of a search on “global warming” with questions that have the most answers first:

All tricks and tips aside, we’ve recently made some improvements to our search algorithm on the backend to help return more accurate results for each query. So please check it out and let us know what you think. The team that worked on these improvements feels that these are only the first steps in improving search – there will be more to come. Let us know any other suggestions you have to help improve your search experience.

Taking it off and keeping it off.

Keeping fit doesn’t always have to involve turquoise lycra!

What’s the fastest way to lose weight?

Isn’t that just the age old question. If it were easy there would be nobody struggling to drop the kilos. While the answer is actually definitive – eat less, exercise more, putting that into practice can be somewhat complicated.

For example if you do decide to take off on a run or a bike ride, how long should you go for? And will you have to keep increasing the amount of exercise you do over time to continue to lose weight? There is the question of what time of day is best to exercise, and people also wonder what types of workouts will be best at helping them stay motivated and achieve their goals.

Then of course, there’s the food issue. A lot of people get carried away on starvation programs and shortcuts that simply backfire. The key is to figure out what old wives’ tales and myths to avoid and to do some research so that you’re well informed enough to make healthy decisions about what your put in your body. Figuring out what to eat, how much eat and when to eat it is part of the process, and once you get into a routine of healthy food with the occasional treat it starts getting easier because that’s when you start to see the results!
