Seven Sunrise on Yahoo!7 Answers

This week Yahoo!7 is celebrating the launch of the new look Sunrise website, which brings all the elements of Mel and Kochie’s hit morning show that you love together in one great destination. You can watch clips from live performances on the show, access fact sheets from interviews, jump on the soapbox to present your point of view and even add your flickr pics.

Mel, Kochie and the rest of the team have also signed up to Yahoo!7 Answers, and they’ll be putting a new question to the community every week. Melissa Doyle is up first, with a question on something that is very close to her heart – working mothers. It is hard to imagine how she manages to get up each day and present a show that is live to air at 6am, while still managing two small children.

Have a look around the new site – you could practically spend all day on it, there’s so much fun stuff! And keep an eye out for the presenters’ questions coming up regularly on Yahoo!7 Answers.

Accurate, schmaccurate!

One of my favourite movie genres is “period” films – ones that bring events from history to life on the screen. The lives of those characters always seem so much more dramatic and exciting than my own. However that just might be due to something known as artistic licence. Don’t read on if you enjoy the idea that what we see in the movies actually took place…

Take 300 for example. What a fantastic achievement for those 300 Spartan soldiers, defending their country against the powerful Xerces and his million men. Er, not exactly. Although there are records of the Spartans being outnumbered in battle – how on Earth would the bad guy have kept a million of his soldiers fed and watered while on the move through Ancient Greece? Think about it.

And Mel Gibson’s intense portrayal of the Mayan life in the movie Apocalypto. Exciting and action packed, but not necessarily true to the way anthropologists have depicted life in those times. Mel Gibson’s own acting in Braveheart won him great acclaim, again, the story… somewhat inflated.

I loved the costumes and characters in the recent Sofia Coppola film Marie Antoinette, however historians probably didn’t. And her father Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now film doesn’t get a high mention in the list of films that correctly portrayed the Vietnam war.

Fortunately for us the environmentally terrifying film The Day After Tomorrow wasn’t exactly foreseeing the future, and perhaps unfortunately neither was Back to the Future II, which predicted automatically lacing shoes (although that went forward to 2015, so we live in hope.)

The main reason, however, that all these movies seemingly go out of their way to twist and bend history, is that it makes them all the more fun for us to watch! And of course if we want the real story we can always ask on Answers!

Lest we forget

Don’t be surprised if you notice people taking a quiet moment at 11am on Sunday morning for Remembrance Day. This event has been noted in many countries since the 11th of November in 1918, the official end of World War I. Although it comes under different names in different countries, such as Armistice Day or Poppy Day, it has the same meaning – stopping to remember the sacrifice of those men and women who have died or suffered in wars and conflicts and all those who have served during the past 100 years.

While the day isn’t officially a holiday in Australia, it is still very important as there are so many of us with relatives who lost their lives or their loved ones at war. There are many different ways to mark the day, but most do so by buying a simple red poppy from Legacy and wearing it on their lapel as a reminder of the sacrifices made by so many.

I am lucky not to have lost a family member to war, but I stop to think about my own Grandfather who returned from service without so many of his friends.

Have a nice weekend.

This week’s featured user – Rygar

Introducing this week’s featured user – Rygar. With a very respectable 49% best answer rate, Rygar has amassed himself nearly 2,500 points since joining Answers mid last year.

Rygar’s answers extend across several categories, but he can very often be found responding to questions in the Perth category, being that he hails from there. He is able to give advice on tourist attractions in the city itself and on various travel destinations around it. Rygar is also obviously a fan of the beach – as a keen fisherman he can often be found many nautical miles to the west of Perth hauling in a feel of dhufish or blachin groper and he’s always got advice for other people interested in getting a line wet. He’s an authority on the best surfing beaches in WA and is also very well travelled – so if you’re asking for info about any other parts of Australia it’s highly likely you’ll get an informed response from Rygar. When he’s not busy prowling Yahoo!7 News, Message Boards or Answers this West Coast Eagles fan is busy working as a senior manager for a multi-national scientific corporation – perhaps the reason why he also has lots of answers for science and chemistry related questions… and even though he lists his other hobbies as focusing on the share market and home renovations he must have a pet that he’s fond of – because he’s also an expert on cat halitosis and weaning kittens!

Thanks for your continuingly helpful contributions Rygar – we’ll keep an eye out for more of your great Answers!

Who keeps reporting me?

We’ve noticed lately several questions from community members who are convinced that somebody is tracking their questions and getting unnecessarily enthusiastic with the “Report this” button. While we do investigate any claims of targeting, we wanted to shed some light on the situation and clear up any misconceptions that you may have.

We wanted to remind you that while the Community Moderation function does put control of the content posted on Yahoo!7 Answers in your hands, each question or answer that gets reported is still considered by our highly trained Customer Care agents before being removed. So just because a person has reported the question does not mean it will be removed, but if a mistake is made you can always appeal it to us. Also, keep in mind that our new system adjusts the trust of the reporter to reflect any possible abuse of the system.

If that weren’t enough, the Customer Care Team is still very active in reviewing the postings on Answers and without going into too much detail – we are keeping an eye on things. So perhaps if you’re a bit bewildered about why every question of yours gets taken off it would be worthwhile having another check through the Community Guidelines to make sure it’s not for a valid reason.

The race that stops a nation

Is it really that time of year again already? It must be… because everybody here in the office is wearing lovely dresses and hats, despite the grey and rainy weather.

Explaining to a foreigner why we are all so obsessed with one horse race is a little difficult, but for the past 146 years everybody in Australia has put their pens down at 3pm (or a little earlier) on the first Tuesday of November no matter where they are in the country to have a few drinks and watch a bunch of horses run in a big circle.

For most of us it’s the one time of year we would even consider putting money on a horse race, but all of a sudden everyone is an expert on which horse is most likely to cross the finish line first and on things like odds, which we never normally think about!

Of course for a lot of people the Melbourne Cup has morphed into a fashion event, with girls competing to have the lowest cut, shortest dresses and the most outrageous hats – rain, hail or shine on the day you can bet your bottom dollar there will be lots of flesh on show – that’s a sure fire winner!

Good luck having a flutter!

Making an Absolutely Fabulous career change

Finding a career that you find satisfies you is difficult when you are young. When I was back in school I just knew I wanted to be like Patsy and Eddie from Absolutely Fabulous (minus the Bolli-stoli drinking!). I wouldn’t work very much and would be able to buy designer threads picked straight from the runway. Life would be very glamorous!

While I did end up working in fashion for a number of years, I somehow found myself in the online industry – and here I am today working for the last two years on one of the best products I have come across on the web. It seems a career change at any age can be good for you!

My career change was a bumpy ride as I didn’t have a lot of advice on making the changes, so I want to make it easier for others who are contemplating going through a similar experience.

Share your thoughts with the Answers community by answers our question:
What advice do you have on career-change for others who may be going through this process?

The Yahoo!7 Teams

Here at Yahoo!7 we’re just one big happy family, always ready to have a chat and share wherever we can.

And here at Answers we’ve got such a good thing going with all our fantastic community members that we’re happy to share some of the love with the other Yahoo!7 teams, getting them involved in asking questions to see what great answers people will come up with.

You may have spotted the Yahoo!7 TV Team popping their head up over the past few weeks, with questions about their newest and most popular shows. They also like to answer questions from time to time, trying to help where help is needed. The Yahoo!7 Music Team had a great question for the community recently too, wanting to know which music album you would choose if you could only listen to one for the rest of your life.

With Christmas around the corner the Yahoo!7 Shopping Team has also been taking part in Answers, gathering the WORST Christmas gift stories so that they can help people find the best Christmas gifts over the next few weeks.

Today’s question is from the Yahoo!7 Movies Team, who ask you what is your favourite “summer” movie? You’ll be able to see the question in the features module on the homepage over the weekend and deduct my answer – Point Break! Maybe it’s getting a little old school but that movie just took surfing from cool to hot… and Keanu still rocks this Yamster’s world!

Keep an eye out for those Yahoo!7 Team questions and have a great weekend!
