This week’s featured user – Menthoids

Introducing this week’s featured user – Menthoids. A self described jack of all trades, this Sydney born user has tried her hand at millinery, making kids’ clothes and writing, however at the age of 44 she decided to officially finish school and complete a degree in Biomedical Science before moving on to a medical degree.

Menthoids is fascinated by physiology (how the body works) and pathophysiology (the mechanisms of disease), so it’s not suprising that she is a top user in the Heart Diseases, Infectious Diseases and Medicine Categories, earning more than 7,000 points and gaining a 49% best answer rate since she joined Answers just a few short months ago.Her experience in the medical field allows Menthoids to answer a wide range of questions on all sorts of health related subjects, including chest infections, blood pressure and chicken pox. She can respond to people’s queries about their cold feet, dispel myths about stretch marks and even talk fitness.Along with being a mother and a grandmother, Menthoids’ grand plan is to become a doctor so she’s an incredibly busy woman! But between writing curriculum subjects and studying she does find time to participate on Answers, where she feels she can really help some people with her advice. She enjoys finding questions that involve a little bit of research, so she can learn something herself by accepting a challenge.Congrats Menthoids on being such a great contributor to Answers – we’ll see you around!

Question of the Year – any suggestions?

Recently Yahoo!7 Pulse released the most popular searches of 2007 – some of which were more suprising than others.

It’s not unexpected that Britney Spears was top of the list for the whole year – she created so many scandals over the months that people just couldn’t stop talking about what she was going to do next, and searching for the latest news online. Interestingly though, the second and third results for online searches using Yahoo!7 were Weather and Real Estate. It just goes to show that while Aussies do like their celebrity gossip they’re also interested in using the net to find information a little more relevant to their daily lives.

But as we approach the end of 2007 – (way way way too rapidly if you ask me), I’d like to know what your favourite questions on Answers have been. Did you come across some information that you just found fascinating? Perhaps someone gave you an answer that comprehensively solved your problem and saved you from expense or disaster. Maybe there were a couple of questions that you starred because they really made you laugh.

If you’ve got any suggestions for “question of the year” shoot us over an email, including the URL of the question and keep an eye out towards the end of the month for the results!

Summertime, and the living is… steamy!

Summer has officially begun here in Australia, and while Sydney had a wet and windy day on the 1st of December other states are already well and truly enjoying the sunshine. Australia doesn’t hold the record for reaching the highest temperature on record, but it certainly feels like you could fry an egg on the pavement for most of us during the summer months.

If you don’t love summer you can hardly call yourself Australian because there’s certainly no avoiding the hot weather no matter where you are in the country. And if you can’t beat the heat you may as well join it – by hitting the beach as often as possible and by meeting up with friends for a bbq on a long, warm evening. Just remember the insect repellent! There is no escaping those ravenous mosquitoes who swarm about with a thirst for blood come dusk and leave us itching for days.

The slip, slop, slap message gets reiterated around this time of year, and for good reason, because not only can a bad sunburn affect your long term health but it is amazingly painful in the short term! There aren’t many of us who get a bad burn more than once a season. Ouch! Another thing to remember is that our pets don’t like the extreme heat that much either – leaving them outside without shade or stuck in a hot car on a summer day can be a fatal mistake.

Yahoo!7 has conveniently wrapped all your summer lifestyle needs into one handy page – you can view it to see what’s on at the movies or on TV, where to go on holidays or even for some tips on how to make your dollars last longer over the holiday period.

Here’s to a great summer!
