Get the name you’ve always wanted

Putting Answers to the side just for a moment we wanted to let you know some exciting news from Yahoo!7 Mail.

Remember when you went to sign up for your first email address, only to find that every conceivable variation of your name was already taken? So you were left with two options for your alias – using underscores and random numbers e.g. fred_blogs001234 or taking the creative road and thinking up something like hahafunnyguy@yahoo.com.au . The second option may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but then you realised that you’d be using your email address for all facets of your life – including emailing potential employers! Suddenly hahafunnyguy didn’t seem so appropriate now did it?

Well now’s your big chance to get that name you’ve always wanted. Yahoo!7 has today launched the new mail domain y7mail.com, which means if you’re quick you can sign up to have your own name – no underscores, no random numbers.

And the other great news is that it’s easy to transfer all your mail over from your old account – no matter what domain is was hosted under, and an email will automatically be sent to all your contacts letting them know your new email address.

Plus Yahoo!7 Mail gives you current temperature and weather forecasts for your city when you log in, and automatically connects you to Yahoo!7 Messenger. What more could you want!

Make the change! Here’s the link to the new Y!7 Mail.

Have a great weekend!

Your stars on Answers

One thing I really hate is arguing – I’ll often back down to someone else’s opinion just to keep the peace, and if people around me start to bicker I start to feel uncomfortable and will usually make an effort to calm the situation.

This trait is something I’ve always associated with being a Libran under the astrological chart. Flaring tempers do nothing to help the scales that Librans require to keep balanced at all times! Having a look through Answers, it is clear that many people believe this about Librans – that they always strive for harmony and balance (and that they’re intelligent and glamorous, but I won’t go an about that!).

Perhaps this is why things never worked out with one particular boyfriend I had in the past – a fiery and passionate Aries who was probably better off with one of the feistier signs of the zodiac. Had I checked out the Astrology category on Answers I might have figured this out sooner!

There are plenty of questions in the Astrology Category of people seeking their astrological love match, but it’s helpful to look into this kind of thing from more than a relationship perspectives as well. Finding out a friend or colleague’s star sign can shed some light on why they behave a certain way or why they don’t get along with other people at times. It’s fun to check out your stars too for some info on what the day or year ahead has in store for you.

Sure a lot of people think this kind of stuff is mumbo jumbo and will quickly step in to try to squash people’s fun (hooray for the report button), but there’s no harm in posting some fun questions in the Astrology category about horoscopes and star signs – there is a big community out there with some really informative and interesting responses.

Don’t forget too that you can read your daily horoscope on Yahoo!7 Lifestyle, along with a great blog from Astrologer Yasmin Boland.

Help from all over the world

While catching up with friends from Perth over the weekend I was pleased to hear that they had been using Yahoo!7 Answers to get hold of some information that they weren’t able to track down elsewhere on the net. They were really pleased with how quickly they had a helpful answer and mentioned what a great time saver Answers can be.

It’s great to see that Answers is used all over Australia – by anyone who is able to get access to the internet. You can be as broad or as specific as you like – more often than not someone will have the response you’re looking for. And one right answer is really all you need in most cases!

No matter where you live all you have to do is log on and the help of the community is right at your fingertips. Even this user who is based in a remote aboriginal community and has to charter a plane when she wants to go shopping is able to get in touch with people simply by asking a question on Yahoo!7 Answers.

Answers is a great way to touch base with people outside Australia too – reading other people’s experiences can help you plan a holiday, or even guide you towards the right choice on a life changing decision like immigrating.

So whatever you want to know – even if it’s just the answer to a trivia quiz question – make Answers your first stop!

Happy Australia Day!

Christmas wasn’t really that long ago, but what the heck – let’s have another public holiday! This time in honour of the arrival of the First Fleet on the 26th of January 1788, 210 years ago.

I’ve noticed Australians are increasingly patriotic and supportive of Australia Day, and it seems the celebrations get bigger every year. In fact, some people believe the day should be stretched out to a whole week of public holidays – and are publicly campaigning for it! I’m not sure what the Rudd Government would make of such a petition … but let’s just say it’s unlikely to be included in any new legislation for 2008!

While we all have slightly different ways of commemorating the occasion you can bet your bottom dollar we’ll all do the same thing at some stage – throwing something on the barbie and having a bit of a feast… and enjoying the time off with family and friends.

Have a great weekend!

Goodbye Heath

When news breaks the way it did this morning everybody’s first reaction is disbelief.“Surely not!”
“That can’t be right!”

The death of a successful man in the prime of his career just doesn’t make sense, but sadly today that’s the headlines we were met with – Australian Heath Ledger has been found dead in his apartment at the age of just 28.

On Answers, the questions started appearing just seconds after the news broke. The early questions were simply responded to with disbelief, and then people started asking why this tragedy has happened. It is certainly hard to understand what would make a person who seemingly has it all – including a beautiful daughter – feel the need to take drugs, which is what initial reports suggested as the reason behind Heath’s death.

Sadly too, this isn’t the first time such an event has happened. It almost seems like fame and sadness go hand in hand, and it reminds us all that a glittering career doesn’t mean a safe and steady personal life free from pitfalls. Prior to his death, Heath had mentioned that stress and anxiety were taking their toll, and that he felt like he hadn’t slept in weeks.

Fans are today remembering Heath for his contribution to film over recent years, what a shame his life has been cut short when there was still so much in the future to be enjoyed.

Catching some zzzzz’s

Considering that we all do it at some stage every day of our lives, it’s not suprising that more than 2 hundred thousand questions on Yahoo!7 Answers relate to the topic of sleep – getting it, not getting it and getting better at it.

The amazing thing about sleep is that even though we all need it to survive, it’s not always that easy to do. So there are thousands of these questions simply wanting to know –“ how do I get to sleep at night?” In reponse to these questions are thousands of helpful responses and tips from people who have had their own battles with insomnia. It is scary to learn that some people suffer from insomnia so badly that it kills them! Fortunately this is very rare, but it’s not a pleasant thought when you’re lying awake at 3am. The other funny thing is that while it can be so difficult to fall asleep at night, often if you were given the opportunity to lie down at 4pm you’d have no trouble dozing off! Maybe those Mediterraneans are on to something with their regular naps after lunch.

There is a lot to learn about the subject of sleep – like why we lie under blankets even when it’s warm outside, and why a lot of people find themselves twitching before they drop off. And then there’s dreaming – how asleep do you need to be to do it and what do all those funny images mean? And what causes bad dreams, or worse, night terrors, which many children struggle with as they are growing up?

All this talk of sleep leads to another question – how do you keep yourself from dropping off?

The week in review

Once the scandal over the cricket died down and India and Australia agreed to play nice it left us with little to talk about at the beginning of this week.

Fortunately some kid in Melbourne decided to throw a party, which got out of hand and resulted in 500 kids running around and damage to police cars and neighbour property totalling 20 thousand dollars. Now, this kind of thing pretty much happens every weekend somewhere in the country, but for some reason the Australian media decided to turn it into the biggest story of the week, allowing the funny looking 16 year old to go on TV, where he refused to apologise for his actions.

Which of course spurred a spate of questions on Answers! People just can’t understand why he is suddenly getting so much attention.

And the news of the week took us from one perplexing interview to another – with a video of actor Tom Cruise spouting the benefits of Scientology. Well that’s what we think he was doing, it didn’t really make much sense to those who watched it. But again, a lot of hits on an online video results in a lot of questions on Answers, and users certainly want to know what others made of Tom’s passionate ramblings.

And just when you thought there was no real news out there a plane crashed in the UK. Fortunately, nobody was badly injured, but there is now a lot of speculation over what the cause of the accident was.

A whale of a time

There has been renewed talk of whaling again this week, with activitists being captured by Japanese Whalers while protesting whaling in the Antarctic. There are so many people who feel that whale hunting is archaic and unnecessary and should be banned all together so this issue is constantly in the headlines. While the debate over whaling is widespread, I thought I’d take a look into what makes these beautiful creatures the object of focus and wonder for so many.

For instance, it is suggested that whales were originally land animals but that they evolved over time to live in the water. That can help explain why they are one of the few mammals that do so, as some of their features seem more suited to land dwelling. Even the fact that they have to breathe must make things difficult, but fortunately they have changed over time to make that easier, and they’re also able to hold their breath and dive great distances, unlike other mammals.

I was also fascinated to learn about how whales are able to drink saltwater to stay alive, and how they wouldn’t survive if you did put them in freshwater. And I was relieved to note that while their cousins are ominously name Killer Whales, it is unlikely that a human will ever be the victim of one in the wild!

The Spice Girls on Answers

Who can believe it was more than ten years ago that the Spice Girls burst onto the pop music charts! Sporty, Scary, Posh, Baby and Ginger changed girl power as we knew it and had success that nobody could have ever predicted. Then all of a sudden they were over as soon as they had begun, with marriages and the lure of solo careers shattering the image of five girlfriends out there having fun together.

But friendship never really ends does it? So the Spice Girls are back!… and hitting the road for their first tour of the noughties. This time it will be different – there are seven mini Spices to bring along, as well as a couple of husbands who may be feeling neglected while their wives step back into the spotlight as a group. But the outfits are still fabulous and let’s face it – those tunes are as catchy as ever!

In honour of the tour the Spice Girls are joining Yahoo!7 Answers with questions for the community. Baby Spice Emma Bunton posted her question a short while ago, and this week Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham has a question very relevant to her current situation – “What is your advice on settling in to a new country?” Life in America must be interesting for the very British Posh, even with Hollywood royalty such as Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes counted amongst her friends.

Keep an eye out for the other Spice Girls on Yahoo!7 Answers over the coming weeks!
