Anyone for tennis?

Just when you thought the excitement of summer was dying down the tennis gets underway – and one can’t help but be a little intrigued as the event builds to a grand finale.

The Australian Open tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments held each year and offers a share in 20 million dollars in prize money! It’s enough to make you want to pick up a racquet yourself! There are plenty of players picked as potential winners this year – although Henin and Federer are still favoured more than anyone else to work their way into the top positions.

On Answers, there are plenty of questions revolving around the subject of tennis, particularly as there is so much confusing terminology. For example, players are seeded, but their seed isn’t always the same as their rank, which can be difficult to understand, and when they’re yet to score it’s read as ‘love’, which also makes little sense to anyone new to the game. Even the scoring system takes a little getting used to.

If you want all the latest scores and results it’s there for you on Yahoo!7 Sport, or you can just head to the Yahoo!7 Homepage and search for ‘tennis’ or for your favourite player.

Celebrity buns

Another day, another celebrity pregnancy announcement.

This time it’s our very own (I think it’s compulsory to call her that) Nicole Kidman. I wonder how many headlines have started rumours that she’s been pregnant over the years… this time it’s finally happening and good luck to her. The baby won’t be much younger than her best friend Naomi Watts’ bub – they can be celebrity baby playmates just like Suri Cruise and Gwen Stefani’s baby Kingston.

But Nicole is married and respectable so it’s hardly exciting – the pregnancy of Ms Spears Junior is far more scandalous and headline grabbing. Jamie Lynn is only 16 and confessed her situation to People Magazine before the rumours even began. The breaking news was followed by the announcement that her mother’s plans to release a book on parenting have been shelved. Perhaps grandparenting would be more appropriate!

In further pregnancy news Jessica Alba is well and truly on her way to motherhood – another surprise, as the previous rumour had been that she and boyfriend Cash Warren had split up!

Nursery stores in Hollywood will be rubbing their hands in glee – with junior Ritchie, Lopez and Aguileras on the way this year it’s just a baby fest… but for most of us the curiosity lies in waiting to see who will come up with the strangest name!

Weekend wrap

What a weekend! There has certainly been a lot to talk about over the past few days.

If you caught the cricket yesterday you’d have been highly impressed by Michael Clarke’s three wickets in five balls to bring the Australian team to victory over India. Many on Answers constantly ask what India needs to do to beat Australia – but so far there hasn’t been any winning advice! The excitement of Australia’s win was quickly overshadowed, however, by suspensions and accusations of teams being unsportsmanlike. It is sour grapes or are the Aussie really bending the rules as they have been accused?

Another Britney breakdown over the weekend too, with her ending up in hospital but quickly released. Britney was the most searched for woman on Yahoo!7 in 2007, and it seems she’ll keep making headlines in ’08 – with many speculating that the reasons behind her antics are more than just in the pursuit of attention.

And if it’s not devastating bushfires then it’s destructive floods – many parts of northern NSW were submersed in water over the weekend after heavy rains swept over the area. It is great to have relief from the drought, but this volume of water only makes for high insurance claims and a lot of carpet at the rubbish tip.

Sticking to your resolution

Alright – hands up if you’ve already broken your New Year’s resolution. It has only been four days but most of us are already shaking our heads and lamenting that it only took us two days to reach for the second drink, forget about doing sit ups or begin the cycle of throwing wet towels on the bathroom floor and getting hassled about it all over again.

Is there really a way to make New Year’s resolutions stick? What do you have to do to proudly be able to state on New Year’s Eve that you made a change that lasted the whole year?

Bruce Ritchie, Editor of Men’s Health Magazine is asking that very question this week, keen to hear from you how you go about honouring your resolution, especially if it involves getting fit. (And don’t we all promise ourselves that we’ll up the ante on the amount of exercise we do in January!)

Perhaps we should all resolve to exercise less and drink more – that way when we fail we won’t feel so bad!

2008 – looking forward

Three days into the new year already! 2007 is on its way to becoming retro – we’ll look back on Delta Goodrem’s musical release, Britney’s antics and the APEC conference as a way of remembering the year, along with the new Apple iphone and the first stages of High Definition television.

Those technologies will eventually appear old hat, as new and wondrous products are launched to make our lives easier/more complicated depending on how you look at things. There are already plenty of gadgets poised to hit the market in 2008.

It’s also an Olympics year, and while nothing will ever be as thrilling to us as the Sydney Games no doubt the excitement will build as the countdown begins in earnest and the time comes to watch our Australian hopefuls compete against the best in the world.

In the USA, a race of different kind will be followed by the eyes of the world this year. George Bush will have served his maximum time and an election will be held to decide his successor. Hopeful Democrat candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are still working on their pre-selection campaigns, but either of them being chosen and going on to win the presidency will be a historic victory as the first of its kind in the States.

For Sydney, the global event that everyone is bound to be talking about is World Youth Day, which will take place in July and involve thousands of visitors from all over the world. Fortunately as we’ve made our way through the noughties and hosted the Olympics, the Rugby World Cup, the Gay Games and the aforementioned APEC Sydney is pretty good at making room for everyone!

There’s also plenty to look forward to on Answers in 2008 – we’ve got lots in store so keep an eye on the blog for updates.

In the meantime – tell us what you are most excited about for the coming 12 months.
