New to Answers? Put on a happy face!

We’ve noticed lots of new registrations on Answers over the first couple of months of the year – many coming to us from the hugely popular Sunrise website, and some from other Yahoo!7 properties such as News and Mail.

There has been a debate on Yahoo!7 Answers for quite some time over whether people who use avatars and photos get more answers than those who sport simply the gray anonymous face. The answer to that is an emphatic YES!

Just put yourself in the place of the Answerer who is looking to share information. If you end up answering to a sad-looking gray face (meet Mr. Anonymous!), who can blame you for thinking, “Who is this person?” and “Why should I answer him?” In case you are the owner of such a gray face and wondering why no one seems to answer your questions, well, there you go!

On the other hand, if you come across a nice photograph or a colourful Avatar, you can instantly draw up an association of how this person could be. Plus there is the association factor, where you can say, “Hey I recognize this person” or “I think he’s answered one of my questions before,” or simply “Nice avatar, seems like a genuine person. Let me see if I can help.”

Believe it or not, giving your profile a ‘face’ helps in instant recognition. Using an Avatar or photograph marks you out from the others. It reveals a bit of your personality, giving your profile a distinct flavour and conveying a good first impression. Surprised? It’s simply how the human mind works!

Now that you’re are convinced, here’s what you should do:

1. Go to your profile page.

2. Click on Edit my Info.

3. Next to the ‘Picture’ header, choose your Yahoo!7 360 photo, or your Avatar.
And if you don’t have an avatar, but would like to, you can create one immediately!
