More Aussie Aussie Aussie on Yahoo!7 Answers

AussieHave you noticed something new when you visit the homepage of Yahoo!7 Answers? Are you seeing more questions about meat pies, Aussie Rules and all things True Blue? You may or may not have noticed, but Yahoo!7 Answers has made a small change to help to bring all the local content to the surface so you find the most relevant information at the click of a mouse.

Previously when you visited Yahoo!7 Answers, the default setting was to display questions from all English speaking users. This meant that often you would see questions from Americans about 4th July fireworks, from Brits asking where to find decent wet weather gear and from the Canadians asking about (or aboot) bears on the Yukon.

We have recently changed the default setting so now only questions from Australian users are shown up when you enter Yahoo!7 Answers. We decided upon this change to give a better experience to you, our loyal users. We want you to immediately be able to see more local content and be able to answer the questions that are most relevant to you.

If you want to see questions from overseas, you can easily change back to all English questions. Simply go to the drop down box on the bottom left below the menu, click on it and select ‘All English questions’ instead of ‘Australian questions only’ (see the bottom image for a screenshot). Voila, you’ll be able to see all the English speaking international content once again. It doesn’t affect who sees your questions – they can still be seen by Answers users all over the world so for non Australia specific questions, you’ll still receive plentiful advice with an international flavour to it.

We think is going to make the experience on Yahoo!7 Answers even better. It’s a relief that now when you see a question about thongs, you know that they’re talking about the ones on your feet ;-)

  2. That’s pretty cool! nice to see more of an Aussie emphasis. But I do think you need to change the Blog link at the top right corner to direct to this blog rather than the old blog

  3. I hate it. Is this happening in other international versions of yahoo answers? I upload a question on Yahoo answers to get answers from the widest variety of people possible. I want international visitors to read my question too!

Having to change to “view all English questions” every single page is so annoying. Why isn’t there a setting I can use to make viewing all English questions a default?

  4. I had noticed. And it’s annoying!
While I appreciate the thought, what about letting US decide whether we want the Australian questions as the default? I’m forever swapping it to all English questions! Is there some way you can tweak this infernal nuisance so that when I log in, I can decide what the default will be for the rest of my stay? I find it VERY ANNOYING constantly switching to ALL. FYI… some of us like answering questions on American television, Dr Who, and who the heck are the Jonas Brothers anyway?!? LOL

All I’m asking is for a small “button”. Let ME choose ALL or Australian. I’m finding your default irritating and narrow-minded. Thx

  9. I must say I have not seen any other Qs except the ones I have posted.
I had to ask a Q about what was going on before I figured out what was happening.
I understand why you have done it but so far its a dismal failure.

come on Aussies show the Anzwers community we are not a slack mob who cant ask a simple Q.

  10. I think some people here missed the bit about being able to switch it back to english only.

It’s good to have this feature there, I used to have to go through many questions before one that I could answer.

The US is way over popular, the first page is like 15 seconds of questions, but the Australian one is like 15 minutes of questions, that’s very slow..

  11. I understand the intent here, but when answering questions, the Australian only set is rather limited. Especially if you are like me and answer mainly in one niche category. It’s a nice idea to agglomerate Aussie questions and answerers together but I think this feature would be better if there was a way to turn it off. Like maybe an option in the profile page or just making sure it stays on international when selected.

  12. Thanks for all your comments – rest assured that we are going to keep monitoring how this new functionality works for you and address your concerns.

This is an international feature that is being rolled out to many countries in order to localise content and ensure quality rather than quantity of answers.

As I mentioned, you can change back to All English questions and once you do this it will remain this way until the end of your session. Each time you go back to visit Answers you will have to readjust the settings.

There are several countries that have been using default country questions for over a year now and it is working well for the users of those countries. Keep giving us feedback, but we ask you to give it a go for a while.

    Thanks.

  15. I hate it.

I hadn’t in fact noticed that it had been done but had been wondering why suddenly, Answers had become really boring. Goodness knows what interesting questions I missed before it came to my attention.

Caitlin says that once you change to All English Questions, it will stay that way until the end of your session. That hasn’t happened for me and I find that I’m constantly needing to change to AEC. I guess your definition of a session and mine are different.

Why, oh why can’t you allow us to set what we want the default to be? And then leave it at that all the time until we change it either temporarily or select a new default.

The new thing is especially ridiculous in a section like Travel – Australia. A large percentage of the questions in there are from non-Australians who are looking for answers from Australians. I’ve been in there this morning and thought I’d been through everything until I noticed that it had reset to Australian Questions Only (I’d selected All English Questions 30 minutes earlier) and lo and behold! a heap of additional questions appeared from non-Aussies. Crazy!

If it’s been working well for people from other countries, I can only assume that people in those countries are more insular than Australians. Aussies are interested in the whole world, not only our own neck of the woods.

Please change it back or at least allow us to nominate what view we prefer and keep it that way until we deliberately change it.

  16. I’m as Aussie as the next person. But the one thing I liked about this site was it’s connection to the rest of the world.
To a small degree you are isolating us.
Why not let us choose our own default setting?
    Thank you,
    Catherine

  17. This is not an improvement. I am mostly on Astronomy & Space or Religion & Spirituality with the occasional look into Cars & Transportation and a few other pages. Australian questions in this internationally relevant area are relatively rare. Don’t tell me I can select “All English Questions”. Adding another step to the operation of the program is not an improvement as far as the user is concerned.

I do not know whether this is related but today on “All Categories” I see questions that are 2 seconds old. When I go to R & S or A & S the newest question is five or six hours old, even when “All English Questions” is selected. Both these areas are fairly active so the newest question being so old is improbable.

Is the program actually defaulting to Australian Questions Only but not showing this in the national selection box? Refreshing the page with “All English Questions” selected makes no difference.

  18. Hi philiptrood,

The lack of emails from your contacts is actually a separate issue and is one that we’re currently trying to fix. You can read more about it here – http://www.yahoo7answersblog.com/b4/2008/07/10/email-notifications-from-your-contacts/
