What do you think is the best job in the world?

Tags:

We may as well stop dreaming – The Best Job in the World has already been snapped up. It’s not a fire-fighter, an astronaut or a pro-footballer. Apparently the best job in the world is a six-month Hamilton Island caretaker contract getting paid a whopping $150,000. 34-year-old Brit Ben Southall is one lucky man!

It got me thinking though about other great jobs. Growing up, my dream job was a doctor which remained my goal until high school when I realised that to be a doctor, one had to be good at (and even enjoy) science. Since neither applied to me, that career plan was quickly quashed. Considering the intense training doctors are required to do, you’d want to be pretty passionate about medicine as an occupation.

It’s much easier to imagine what the best job in the world could be when you’re a child and your life is stretched out in front of you with endless possibilities. As an adult though, finances and practicalities all restrict our pursuit of that dream. And for many of us, we haven’t even worked out what our ideal job actually is.

Well Ben Southall’s got what he thinks it the Best Job in the World. Although spending six months on beautiful Hamilton Island would be pretty amazing, I’m pretty sure there are more jobs out there that could be considered the Best Job in the World.

So what do you think is the Best Job in the World and are you doing it? If not, why not?

  10. I agree with the above i work as a childcare assistant and i have so much fun and i feel really good when a child writes their name for the first time or runs to me for comfort because they feel safe. The children at the centre make me laugh, feel proud, astonished and have restored my faith in humanity with their open minds and unconditional love.

  30. My 10 year old thinks being an astronaut or AFL player would be the best job. I always dreamed of being a pilot but hated physics, can’t read maps and regularly have minor crashes trying to park my very small car so it’s probably a good thing I didn’t!

  31. Any job that involves lots of travelling, good food and provide financial security without the need to “kill” anyone. Maybe a not-too-involved politican’s wife, just visiting school (kids under 12), cutting ribbons, keeping mouth shut except for eating and brushing off questions that could jeopardise hubby’s next election (stating that hubby has full support whatever that means), giving “prepared by someone else” speech and triple check it for the possibility to provoke unwanted questions. It fits the description very well. Multi- millionaires heiress also sound good.

  40. The best job in the world, in my opinion, would have to be a tv motoring journalist. If you wanna know what they do for a living, just watch some episodes of TopGear and find out. But I’m at uni studying journalism and my reason for that is because I want to be the next-generation Jeremy Clarkson.

I mean, who wouldn’t want to test-drive exotic cars in locations around the world ( apart from the hippies who think that cars are “baby-killers” even though they go round in old bombs )? I certainly want to. It’s not everyday that you get to test drive a Lamborghini Murcielago? Or a Mercedes-Benz CLS55AMG? Or on the other end of the scale, a worn-out 1991 Mitsubishi Starion Turbo worth less than AUD$2000?

In essence, I believe that the three hosts of TopGear ( and I mean UK TopGear ) have the best jobs in the world because apart from getting shot at by rednecks in Alabama, it involves nothing but having fun and enjoying what’s coming to our roads in the near future. End of discussion.

  41. The best job in the world is that of any mother who would do anything for her child/ren. Who else would dress up as a clown, go to the school and celebrate with all the children and Teachers, everyone’s birthday once a year?? Who else sits up at night and wonders and worries if she is doing the right thing for her child, when that child says “I hate you” because she put her foot down and did not allow the child to go to a party where she knew drugs would be passed around. And it is Mum, who, on Mother’s Day glows when her children give her burnt toast, runny eggs and coffee made up of six spoons of coffee, one spoon of sugar and more milk than water.

Good luck to the gentleman that got ‘the dream job’ but I wouldn’t go back and do anything different for my Mum and I hope my children feel the same way about me.

  42. To score the best job in the world you have to be American. That’s the only way you can get to be a “Top Gun” U. S. Navy jet fighter pilot. Think about it. You get to fly the F/A 18 Super Hornet, one of the deadliest jet fighters on the planet (with more power than every car on the Bathurst grid combined – what a toy to play with), take off from and land on the most powerful ships in the history of the world’s navies, break the sound barrier and get paid for it! All the while getting to travel the whole world, food, health and shore leave into the bargain. What could be better?

  55. ..is no job….being on a pension! True, the money is not that much, but there is more to life security and freedom than money. If you accept the lifestyle a pension financially resticts you to, and to many this is extremely difficult, but it is attainable, this form of income permist you completelt freedom in life. There is no worry in becoming unemployed…no worries in being commanded by ‘bosses” in doing something lest you get fired and it’s your choice to either sleep in in the mroning..or not. Ah….complete freedom!
