Would you want to watch Matthew Johns on TV again?
Wow what a week. Water cooler conversations and news bulletins alike have been bouncing from discussions about paid maternity leave to the treatment of women by Rugby League players, from predictions about the upcoming job losses to the very high profile demotion of Matthew Johns.
Everyone seems to have an opinion about whether Matthew Johns should have been stood down by Channel 9 and Melbourne Storm. A question we featured on the Yahoo!7 Frontpage yesterday got an astounding 700 answers (and counting)! We hope the writer Mumkaren didn’t have get a notification for everyone of those answers… that would be one full inbox! She asked Do you think Matthew Johns should have been sacked for something that happened 7 years ago?
There are some pretty heated opinions on there, here are just a few:
NO!!! It was consensual, not illegal and had nothing to do with Channel 9 or Melbourne Storm. I’d like to see statistics showing how many people have had group sex – I bet you it would be a large percentage. – Altezza

Apparently this was investigated by NZ police and he was not charged. Why does someone get to come back 7 years later and upheave his life. I think it was a publicity stunt on her part and she will probably be well paid for her story. – HJ

The thing is, this type of behaviour brings up wider implications that we’re not unfamiliar with. Remember the Brett Stewart incident? He is still waiting to face court in a few weeks for allegations of sexually assaulting a minor. Yet he was only banned for 4 weeks from the NRL, even though the reason he was inebriated on the night in question was because of a Manly Sea Eagles booze up.
As dogsoldier1962 asked the Answers community, have the NRL backed themselves into a corner? Should the NRL go back over all the incidents that have happened like the Bulldogs in Coffs Harbour, the 3 Broncos players from late last year and even Brett Stewart and start tearing up their contracts?
What is even more scary is what does this behaviour say about the football culture? Why have there been so many scandals like this? Lou asks, why are NRL players prone to pack sex? Is it a rite of passage? There’s certainly a lot of discussion in Answers about it and the NRL has a lot to think about. Furthermore, we have a lot to think about whether these are the type of people we want as role models, particularly in a media capacity like Matthew Johns.

Matt Johns has been cleared by the POLICE and how dare anyone think that they are above the law and its decisions. Vigilante journalism is very dangerous especially when 4 Corners only got one side of the story and did not question the girl about the legitimacy of her story. Old workmates have now said that she bragged about the night and was proud to of slept with multiple members of a sporting team. Im sure 4 Corners new this information but did not want to change their attacking angle on the story. Shame on Australian Journalism for turning into mindless tabloid mush.
The damage was done 7years ago! Why dredge it up seven years later. I am sad to see Matty go, but like everyone is saying there always has to be a scapegoat. At least he was man enough to admit the affair and he had done the wrong thing.Watching the footy show last night was very hard. What I want to know is why 4 Corners got to name and shame Matt Johns but the women making the allegations(who obviously needs help)was allowed to remain hidden? If one is outted, all should be, including the other men involved and the woman. Yes I really enjoy watching the footy shows,they are really refreshing.I enjoy all the Tom Foolery they all get up to. This just highlights the misogynistic nature of football. The NRL is so boring that they need cheergirls to titilate and liven up things (how pathetic!) The sexualisation of young women in a game that despises women and treats them like objects. If I go to watch a game of Netball, I don’t expect to see male cheerboys in tight revealing outfits, I go for the sport. The NRL has no relevance for many people these days. The players are over paid, meat heads who need to get their focus on the game as professional athletes (they are paid enough money and adulation) and get their hands and minds off their penises.

The problem was not what Matthew Johns did with the woman and the other player, but when other members of the team came into the room uninvited. His only apparent mistake was not trying to stop the other men having sex with her, however since the woman appeared to be OK with it then why would he stop them? The whole thing is out of proportion. I don’t care what he does in his private life, I think he is funny and a victim of circumstance. Yes, I would watch him again.

Ive got absolutely no problem at all watching Matty Johns again if he makes it back to the box.The guy has been burnt at the stake by channel nine and by various self interest groups. He broke no law and had the guts to front his wife, tell her the truth and cop it sweet. Its no-one elses business. The woman involved made a choice did what she wanted, changed her mind later and blamed others for the outcome. Matthew Johns should NOT have been sacked, and this is not a question on whether or not someone finds group sex immorally wrong. I must firstly state that in our free society group sex is not a crime. What goes on behind the doors between consenting adults should not be an issue to anyone. If this girl was pressured, did not consent, was asleep, drunk or drugged this would be an entirely different conversation. The incident was investigated by police and no charges were laid which means that according to the best evidence given by over 80 interviewees, the girl involved was willing to be be involved.
It is not unreasonable to understand that ‘Clare’ has experienced trauma in the aftermath of this incident, after all it has become evident how morally unacceptable group sex is in society following the media frenzy over this case. However in light of what I previously mentioned, this girl can only be blamed for her own naivety despite the tragic consequences she has had to endure which are probably a combination of emotional instability, inexperience and being starstruck on the night. This girl was 19 years old at the time and in my opinion, is an acceptable age to make mature individual decisions.
The real criminal here is the media for plastering ‘Clare’ over the country without taking into account her psychiatric condition which clearly played a part in the direction this incident has taken. Four Corners, ACA & others simultaneously carried out a witch hunt with an extreme feminist agenda on Matthew Johns and slanted the direction of their so called journalism to present the issue as sexual assault case.

I’m confident that many of the people commenting here were watching Good News Week or Desperate Housewives when the ABC ran the Four Corners story last Monday. Had they seen it, they might not be so quick to dismiss a league player’s (or ex-league player’s) culpability in such a matter.
The issue of consensuality is secondary here to the culture of the NRL. People like Mr Johns are role models, whether they want to be or not, and as much as I like the guy (who is being scapegoated purely because his name was mentioned in the report) there’s an obvious price to be paid for this action.

If this woman is seriously suffering, and angry at what happened, she should have more class and respect and name all involved or none at all! Just naming John is disgraceful as he is taking all of the blows. This is not fair.
Moreso, if a person is suffering from mental and emotion trauma, the first and most obvious step to take, is to make an appointment with a Counsellor or Psychologist. Who the hell goes on TV unless they want to ruin someone. Is that a healthy way to deal with things? No professional would advise this and i wonder what kind of people she has around her? I implore this woman to seek professional (and private) help. No amount of interviews, media or the public bashing of reputations will help her AT ALL. Only expert assistance and action can help. I can’t help but think that if proper treatment was given over the past seven years, this situation would not be exacerbated so.
Lastly, if the NRL had moved themselves years ago, this might not have turned out differently. It is bloody typical of the NRL to be behind the eight ball.
They can come out after the fact and sack players, deal out suspensions and fines, and say how unimpressed and disappointed they are, but this won’t really appease the public at all. The NRL is run disgracefully! To have players constantly caught out breaking the law, particularly with alcohol related situations, points to a league not taken seriously buy it’s own employees. If the players are to act appropriately in future, there needs to be better discipline, harsher penalties, and many more programs levelled at respect for women and erasing the need to be drunk to be an active member in society.
The game of Rugby League might have it’s supporters and fans, but while it continues to survive as an immature environment of behaviour, while ignoring responsibility to the clubs, the NRL and the greater public, the NRL will remain back in the pack of favourite and respected sports in Australia. They need to do better.

Have a think about what you’d say in prison with 12 aggressive men three times your body weight laughing over your naked body – you’d also be scared sh*tless and probably wouldn’t say a thing either.
Here’s a thought: stop thinking of “consent” like it’s a written document or that the absence of the word “no” is a free ticket to treat someone like dirt and start thinking about what having sex with someone really means.
I wouldn’t watch Johns again; I couldn’t without seeing someone who didn’t really respect women, and that would make me feel awful.
I’m not sure whether he should return to channel 9 or not, Matt certainly has been involved in something Australians know to be wrong. I feel the guy has surely paid for his wrong doing and will probably keep paying for the rest of his life, I guess the reason it is labelled as (wrong) is because it was in a group situation and he is married. As for the girl she is just as much to blame, ok she was only 19, but hey this is an adult, old enough to drink, gamble, and be accountable for all your mistakes, just a bad situation by all parties in the first instance turned worse. Matt lost his position on TV and she gained one.
I would watch Matt Johns at any time in preference to the likes of that boofhead from Melbournes Footy Show, who imgines that all women love him and that he is the least bit funny. Johnsy is possessed of an amazing sense of humour and is relatively talented with his dress up parts which he performs. The fact that something from his past has sprung up matters not to me. As other respondents to this question have already said ‘Who else out there has been involved in this type of thing?’ From what has been shown since this all came up regarding the girl involved, she seemed a wee bit “LOOSE”.

First of all, I hate Matthew Johns. I never did like him, or his brother. But, let’s get some facts straight.
THIS WAS 7 YEARS AGO. There was no fine, no guilty ruling, case was closed. SEVEN YEARS! Come on.
Secondly, a friend of the woman went on TV and said that she wasn’t distraught or upset, she was out bragging about what she did! The media is so stupid, that a woman can cry that she’s upset, get a few interviews, wreck reputations and lives and retire early.
This is a man who’s life has been destroyed. And the most pathetic part is that he’s playing along with it and apologizing. He should be absolutely furious that the world works the way it does.
Ridiculous. Sorry Matthew. If I was you being interviewed on ACA, I wouldn’t be saying “I take full responsibly for my actions”, I’d be saying “why the f–k did I lose my job over a legal incident SEVEN F–KING YEARS AGO?”
Let’s level the playing field. If she’s a slut, then every guy in that room was a slut, married or not. Only a few people know the truth, but this type of behavoir is so sad. I don’t know of any other animal that behaves like humans. As long as anyone knew what was going on should have inserted a lets stop now this is wrong. If not then take the repurcusions.
