What would you splurge on if you won the $90 million lotto draw?

Tags: , , ,

Last week another Tuesday night passed and still the Oz Lotto jackpot hasn’t gone off. It’s a bit disappointing for all of us who spent our hard earned cash on a ticket. On the bright site, at least we had another week to dream about what we’d do with a cold, hard $90 million.

Last week I went to the launch of the Embraer Phenom 300, an Executive Jet that has never before been sold in Australia. If things go my way, this time next week I will have the winning Oz Lotto ticket in my hot little hands and I’ll be able to think about more extravagant purchases, like private jets. Imagine that, being able to fly 9 of your closest friends to Melbourne for an impromptu shopping spree or up the coast for some winter sun. And for only US$7.9million (AU$9.9m), you’d have plenty of change from your $90m for a couple of luxury cars to drive you to the airport.

What else would I buy? Well obviously I’d be calling the real estate agent to talk about my dream home. It would have to be overlooking the water with plenty of balconies and there would be a big fireplace for those cold winter nights where all you want to do is cuddle up with a hot milo and a book. And of course plenty of spare bedrooms for friends to stay when we throw those fabulous dinner parties and serve vintage Grange and Henschke until the wee hours of the morning.

Of course the altruistic side of me remembers that if I won, there would also be a fair amount of money going to charity. However the indulgent part of me wants to endlessly dream. I can just seem myself seeing the hippos and giraffes on a safari in Africa, enjoying a romantic night in a Michelin star restaurant overlooking Paris and splashing out on a boat cruise around the Caribbean with all of my friends and family.

How about you? What would you splurge on if you won $90 million?

  1. I would set up trust accounts for my kids, and grandkids, then I would give a large amount to the church and buy some homes and set up a program to help house the homeless. I would probably buy a home in the US near the ocean and a boat, for my husband, but the rest of the money would go to help those in need.

  2. I would buy a trendy terrace with lots of character near the City, put a large bow on the front door, ring up my son to wish him Happy Birthday and watch his reaction (wouldn’t it be fun!!!).

Seriously, 10 million for research into dementia, so the aging population can enjoy the latter years with grace.

Also, 10 million for research into cancer eradication. Perhaps great theories that have been put on the back-burner at the moment.

The delicious contemplation of what to do next!!

    Cheers and best wishes

  4. I would set myself and my family up for life, a dream home with a gourmet kitchen and luxury bathroom, with a separate wing for my widowed mother who lives with me and her soon to be widowed twin sister. Buy a house for my only child and set up a trust account for him, help my close friends and work colleagues and then let loose with to all the charities that I feel could do with some cash that are overlooked by a lot of people, and maybe set up my own charity trust fund that would disperse funds to vetted applicants

    Buy my sister a house

Help disadvantaged elderly to pay their houses off

  6. I would easily give half of it away to many charities especially to underprivileged kids both here and overseas, refugees, struggling single mums etc. Set up a foundation and invest a lot in property to continue to make money to supply the foundation.
I would buy myself the luxury of a 2 story home with an attic and cellar. And a beach front home. I would buy each of my siblings a house and give some money to my relatives both here and overseas even the ones I’ve never met or haven’t seen in 20 yrs. Even the family i get annoyed at and even probably buy a little property for my annoying ex just so my child has somewhere nice to play when he has contact.
I would give some to animal welfare organizations and in environmental technology.
I would also buy a yellow Volvo and a green jaguar and a grand piano. a helicopter would be cool but a little over indulgent.
    Travel around the World.
Invest a LOT for my child’s future.
Really i did this with 20 million in mind last night and it was just too much money and stress.

  8. I would upgrade from my current terrace and buy the biggest mansion I could find in Newtown and also a heritage mansion in Chelsea, London. I would buy a house for my father by a river or ocean and a boat for him so he could go fishing whenever he wanted.
I would also buy an apartment in Chania, Crete close to the harbour. I would then invest enough of the money to give me a substantial income for life and also set up a trust fund for charities of my choice.

    invest some for college
hopefully put the rest away for my future
but the last thing i would do is travel the world and buy heaps of cool clothes

i would buy some investment properties and live off the profits, i would set my kids up with homes and finances, with what ever is left over i would donate to charities.

  16. In no particular order….

1- pay off my mortgage – then give the house to someone in my town less fortunate
    2- upgrade my car
3- pay off my personal loan
    4- have my dream wedding
5- Set my parents up comfortably for the rest of their lives
6- Same with my sisters – I’d buy them a house each and give them $100,000 to do with whatever they wanted.
7- put 10 million into a Term Deposit for my future children
8- buy a nice new home with nice new furniture
    9- Take a looooong holiday
10- After that… I don’t know what I would do. I would probably advertise on TV and the newspaper for people to write me a letter asking for donations. I would assess who I thought was most in need across the country and divide it up between them all. I’m not greedy… I’d give most of it away, and have fun giving it to people after hearing their stories of how my money would change their lives forever.

    Yep…. thats what I’d do!

  20. I would keep the whole lot to myself and my family. Most homeless people choose to be homeless… It’s been researched before…well before the economy died.

But I would set my family up, buy a holiday home… a couple of investment properties and leave the rest in the bank.

First I would ask for a million of it in cash and then my husband and my sons and myself would throw it up in the air in our lounge and then all roll around in it for a while for sheer enjoyment,Then when reality sets in we actually won it we would sit down as a family and decide what to do with it.To our families you wouldn’t be getting any there are people out there who actually deserve help.

  29. My main goals would be:
Purchase my dream home to live in and a holiday home.
Purchase homes for my adult-children and their children.
Also purchase a house for my sister and sister-in-law.
Buy new furniture for my new home and my adult-children’s new home.
Set up trust funds for my grandchildren to give them a great start for their future and their children’s future.
Buy homes or pay of mortages for people I know or yet to meet that need some assistance in their times of need, generally helping out families while enjoying my journey throughout my life.
Donate to charities such as animal rescues, the blind society and small organizations that are self-funded.
Thank the situation that lead me to the lucky numbers and smile-smile-smile.

  32. Go into hiding for 6 months. Its all mine you can’t have it. Go away. Its not a case of what would you do with it. Its how many friends would you have that you didn’t want? But seriously. Buy a big property, put up some really big nasty fences & build a house right in the middle of it. It would have a hers, his, & kids wings. Help out very few family members & set my kids up for life, invest & enjoy life in general. Although I would still refuse to buy a brand new car til the kids get older. New cars & young kids do not mix well.

  33. *sigh* The amount of times I have done this!
I would build my dream home on an acreage…nothing too over the top or extravagant. Pay off every single cent of debt I have.
Buy an investment property for each of my children and put a significant amount into a trust fund for them as well.
Pay off my parents mortgage and all their bills. Buy my Dad the boat he has dreamed about since who knows when. Then take Mum to a no expenses spared spa retreat while Dad’s off fishing.
Buy my sister and her family a house.
TRAVEL…Take the kids to Disneyland and see the World. Maybe a month in Bora Bora alone too.
Donate money to several charities that have significance to us – childrens hospital, breast cancer research, etc.
Anything left would be spent on a shopping spree in New York. Or maybe Milan…
    Thank goodness dreams are free!

  38. Easy. First of all, find a great financial advisor (probably my father). Walk into the bank with cheque in hand and tell them I want the best interest available, a credit card with a $3 million limit. (with frequent flyer points of course). Buy a nice investment property or 10. Give a set amount to each immediate member of my family (brother, aunts, uncles, cousins). Set up my grandmother and parents with a suite on the Queen Mary 2 for a year long round the world cruise (all expenses paid of course). Throw a party for my friends and have the best gift bags available! Call up a big department store and have them open after hours just for me! Fly to America on my the Qantas A380 in a first class suite (with a couple of friends) and go shopping at Tiffany’s in NYC. Buy $5 million of shares at random, donate $10 million to charity. The remainder, leave in a bank account and then live off the interest.

  39. I would retire from the workforce immediately, never to work again. I would give my mother and my sisters a million or two million dollars each and I would find myself a nice island somewhere and buy myself a nice home on a farm, where i would have animals to keep me company. I love the mountains and the sea and I would want to find an island that had all these attributes.

I would occasionally give large amounts away to charity from time to time but I would put whats left of the money in one of the big 4 banks and live off the interest.

I if had the opportunity to become rich I would make sure I would stay rich by making sensible investment descisions and not spending money on stupid or wasteful pursuits in life

  44. I think $90mill is mor money than what I could ever possibly imagine in mine or anyone else’s lifetime. The answers above convince me that these are very immature individuals with no real sense of worth, and who would end up like most lottery winners. Broke within a few years. No, I believe something like this is a blessing or a curse depending on how good your administration skills are and how disciplined you have been over many years with what you had. It must be fully realised that something like this can only come around once in a lifetime and it must be handled in a correct and mature way. I’m not saying ‘don’t Celebrate’ quite the contrary, but also obtain legal advice and give some away to help others, especially the sick and needy, or to your local church. Invest the rest and make it work for you, yes, buy property, choose wisely your investments, and don’t quit your job. We live in hard and uncertain times, so always use wisdom and consider everything.

  45. I will immediately tithe $9M to the church.

Buy a home for me, bright, airy, modern overlooking the water , pool bedroom facing the water,on the Nth Shore, and another one I have my eye on,on one of the beaches- same features.

    Buy a Mercedes Convertible.

Buy 2 investment properties, possibly commercial.

Give my friends/family/work colleagues varying amounts.

Establish a trust, and set up a committee to disperse the rest of the funds to people in need, from diff charities to paying off peoples mortgages ..but those that are accepted will have to go through training that I will establish to get out of their negative mindset ( if they show evidence of this)

Give to other charities both here and overseas…Youth Off the Streets,MSF, Oxfam etc

Open 2 hostels for homeless people…one female and one male and eventaully organise social functions between them! : )

Do my masters degree, b/c that costs about $25K.

Continue to work where I am currently, one day a week, but the wages that I earn will go straight to my charity fund and/or on diff days, I nominate another colleague to receive my wages for that day : )

  46. With $90 million I would make as many positive changes to the world that I could. I would spend a month researching charities to help and instead of giving them a one-time donation I would place $50 million in a few investment accounts and then have 80% of the interest from those investments paid out to the charities on an annual basis. The other 20% would go into growing the capital so that there would be an ongoing increase on the amount of donation every year.

With the other $40 million I would make sure my own needs were met, I’d buy a cattle station (Yes in Aus we call them stations not ranches), I would set up trusts for my kids that could be accessed twice a year only and I would travel a lot.

  55. I’d do like most and give a lot to charity, cancer research etc. All my friends would have their mortgages paid out and some extra for whatever. BUT, I would do this secretly so that they never knew where the money came from.
I am happy with our life so apart from a house cleaner and future new cars and holidays, I really don’t think I’d splurge.
I could live very happily off the interest of a $1M investment.
I only really want to win so that I can purchase a farm for a family member.
Seriously, this amount of money should be broken down into no more than $5-10M lots.

  56. I think that it’s important not only to think of what to do with the money, but what NOT to do with it. I’d not spend or give much to my kids, even though I love them to bits. I’d help them with it to do anything they wanted but I’d not give them enough to do nothing.

I’d not spend much on a house or a car. It took me years to find a place I can be a part of and I don’t want to waste time doing that again. I’d rather remain a part of my community than have a lovely house in a flash resort far from all my friends of many years. (I’m quite sure they don’t all want to move to the Goldcoast with me)

I’d not spend a huge lot on charity or retire from work. But I would spend a big lump on starting an engineering business locally, that local tradesmen (like myself) can benefit from servicing the mining industry in South Australia. Without having to leave their families and go bush. Kills a lot of birds with one stone that one. Does my community good at a lot of different levels and it could also keep generations of my family employed.

But I would travel. And I’d insist that my kids do too. But then I already do that. Even with relatively little money it can still be done. I earned less than 30K/year, paid maintenance, paid off a house and still sent my son to Germany as an exchange student. Travel is do-able already.

So! Having looked at all the things I’m not going to spend $90M on, and at what I want to do that I don’t need $90M for, I’ve decided to go straight out and not spend everything I have on not buying lotto tickets. I’m on a dead cert guaranteed winner here!

  57. I’d pay my house off to leave only a couple of thousand to pay. (Bank fees are too expensive and i wouldn’t want them to make more than they already have) Just on principal. Take a world trip and miss the nasty destinations. Buy a house for each of our Kids. Set up trust funds for our 3 grandchildren. Buy new cars for all. Give some to charities etc. Maybe invest in something near the beach. Never work again but do voluntary work in worthwhile areas.
Possibly buy a new bigger house for ourselves and have my parents move into this one. (only 6years old.)
And enjoy life to its fullest.

  58. Be quiet about the situation telling no-one.
Keep the money in several hiding spots on my property (many acres)
Over many months and years slowly help others annoumously without them ever knowing the source of where it came from.
Buy items from time to time without others wondering how.
    ‘Keep quiet about the money!’.
1 year has passed……Didn’t tell anyone
2 years have passed…..Didn’t tell anyone
3 years have passed…..Didn’t tell anyone
and so on and so on year after year.
I will know who is to benefit when I pass as they will be true friends and family because I kept quiet and they wanted to be in my life for who I am not what I had.
Charities in need will have donations given annoumously.
    “Shhhhh” I say nothing!”

  59. when the jackport was at 40million. i went to the shop to see if i have won something. the shop owner scanned my ticket, look stunned and informed me I have won something big. i was like “yeah right”. he then told me he was serious and started looking at the ticket for winning numbers. i was curious why the machine didnt manage to inform us the winning amount immediately as usual. soon..i realised ive got all 6 winning numbers instead of 7.!!!! i won 4k plus with no regrets or whatsoever. im contented even though im 1 winning number away from winning 40million. its my biggest winning since caribbean stud’s 4 of a kind (9 years back). god bless”” : )

I dont think there are too many people in the world who would know just how to handle this amount of money at their disposal. thats why I would need the professional help! A win would be good..great..fantastic!!! I could not really describe it in words.

  65. Of course look after my family first, and finally take a holiday. BUT, my priority has always been since I was a child to build a retirement home for the elderly & convelesant, young and old. This would be state of the art & under 24hr camera survalance, all staff would be on camera, even relatives would be able to log in & see around to check on a loved one at any time, something like big brother.I would invest in a holiday appartment & reward kind staff, cruel staff would be charged using film evidence. Mark my word.If you have nothing to hide then a camera shouldn’t deter.ONE DAY WE WILL BE OLD TOO.

  74. If I won 90 million it would be to much to comprehend. All of the above answers are all the same, so not much more to add. Money can bring happiness to some and misery to others. I honestly think 90 million is way too much for only 1 winner. They should of divided this obscene about of money amongst several people. I don’t know if I would be extremely happy if I won that amount of money just way too much for me.

Whoever wins this amount will never be happy.

I’d like to set up a micro loan foundation with interest free loans that helped people to help themselves with education expenses, venture capital, franchises, renewable power systems, recycling centres, community theatres, and self help centres for homeless people. Since it would ultimately be self funding, I could then reproduce the program in other countries around the world.

I would donate to kids charities, diabetes fund, cancer research and a huge portion to animal charities. Now that would be awesome living all by myself with everything i ever wanted.
