spacetrip

It’s hard to believe but space travel is a real possibility for a few lucky (and very wealthy) people. In the year that there was a total solar eclipse and the 40th anniversary of the first man on the moon, Virgin Galactic’s founder, Richard Branson will conduct a world first when he crews his aerospace vehicle, the Virgin Mothership Eve at the air show EAA Airventure Oshkosh 2009.

Space is one of those fascinating yet enigmatic topics. How does weightlessness work and what does it feel like? How were solar systems formed? Why are stars and planets round? Why is the sun yellow? The more you think about outer space, the more questions form in your mind and in many instances, we just don’t know the answers.

Well for the 200 people who have coughed up their US$20,000 deposit for the sub orbital spaceflight on Virgin Galactic, some of these questions will soon be answered. They will hurtle through the edges of the atmosphere at more than three times the speed of sound and they will experience a type of virtual weightlessness as gravity starts pulling them back to earth.

To celebrate, Yahoo!7 Travel have an out of this world trip to Space Mountain for two flying on Virgin Atlantic from Sydney to Hong Kong return with three nights at the funky W Hong Kong and round trip transfers. Click here to enter the competition.

We’d also like to know, if you had the chance, would you like to take a trip to space in your lifetime? Why or why not?

  3. I often sit and ponder on a starry, starry night
What’s out there in outer space
And if there’s other life forms, well I think there might!
But to actually go there, I’m not up to the pace
I get light headed just walking around in high heels
So Terra Firma is for the best place me

  4. Hell Yeah!! if I had the oppotunity. It’s on my to do list before i die. I’ll take the risk and do it and take that oppotunity with both hands and won’t regret it.

  6. I would actually love to explore outer space, because I’d actually like to experience the heavens in person not just looking at pictues from NASA.

  8. In a heartbeat. Only issue I have is the Rutan designed Virgin Galactic is sub-orbital. Al Shepard spent longer up there.

  12. That’s quite a stupid question i have to admit.. I’ld love to go to space to see how weightlessness feels and just for the view… Just sipping a martini and enjoying the view of our dear planet earth from space. And yeah, i will be able to see earth in it’s true beauty, not via the globe sitting in my room!

Well, i’m all packed! ready to leave everything behind to go in space!

  13. I’ld like to see the question, “who doesn’t want to go in space and why?”

  14. I don’t think it’s a stupid question. To be honest, I wouldn’t want to go into space in my lifetime. It’s too dangerous – people die all the time. Also it will be too expensive and I’d rather spend my hard earnt cash on seeing real places rather than empty space. So no, unless it became really safe and much much cheaper I wouldn’t want to visit space.

  16. No I definately would not. I think that it would be very boring and I don’t think that there would be much to see on the planets. I would much rather study our beautiful earth and if I had the chance I would love to have a real good look at all the beautiful corals, fish etc under the ocean. Nah leave space alone and look after our own lovely planet.

  20. How out of this world would it be to travel into space…sounds awesome now..but l guess in the years to come..it will probably be as popular as catching the train to the city.

  25. Visiting space would be a life life changing experience, because it would be so new, so different, so magnificent to our own planet. Space is whole new dimension to our small primal planet, our small human things, houses and rooms, phones, technology, and make up, and computers, are all nothing compared to the stars out there. Just to see it, just a glance would be truley amazing. Planets and stars are the future, and you can’t deny it. Were all so human.

  27. I think this would be the best Anniversary present for my wife and I, normally I would give her chocolates, but she complains as as she is trying to loose weight,
but if we go into space she can still eat chocolate and still loose weight. (zero gravity = less weight)
    pretty clever eh?
