Would you listen to Kyle and Jackie O if they returned to our airwaves?
You either love him or hate him – it seems everyone has an opinion about Kyle Sandilands. This shock jock co-host of the Kyle & Jackie O Breakfast show has been getting press for all the wrong reasons recently for a segment on his show about a 14 year old rape victim.
It’s definitely stirred up some controversy. We featured this question on the Yahoo!7 Homepage last week and incredibly, over 700 people have offered their opinion. Do you think Kyle Sandilands should be sacked?
Many agreed, saying they never liked the show or Kyle:
That entire show should be axed! Kyle is an absolute moron! Of course he should be sacked. At any time during the show, they could have stopped what was happening, but they kept on going. – Hart

Although his future with 2Day FM remains in jeopardy, Channel 10 has taken the next step and has fired Sandilands as a judge on Australian Idol, saying their show is a family program that doesn’t fit with his increasingly controversial persona.
The thing is, shows like Kyle & Jackie O exist because of their shock value. They like to take things a step too far, their core audience loves the crazy stunts they get up to and everyone else votes with their feet and refuse to listen.
They’ve now officially gone too far and have been pulled off air, however it may not be for long. 2Day FM are reviewing their practices and may indeed launch a new version of the Kyle and Jackie O show with better measures in place to ensure such a mistake doesn’t happen again.
If they do return to our airwaves again, will you listen to Kyle and Jackie O or do you think what happened was unforgivable?

Kyle Sandilands is the least professional broadcaster I have ever heard, and that is really saying something. He should be sacked from the network and barred from appearing in the media.
Kyle has got a mouth on him but i dont believe that he deserves all the blame for this 12 year old on air.The young girls mum knew that her daughter had been rapped and yet still made her go on this show knowing again that she was going to be put on a lie detector.Fair enough, Kyle should not of said what he did but he was put on the spot by her answer.When is the girls mum going to take some of the blame herself instead of letting Kyle and Jackie take it all.What mother would put there child in that situation anyway…….

I would never have even heard the interview if Ray Hadley had not played it over and over. He blows up how its such an invasion of the girls privacy but has no problems replaying the interview as did all the TV stations. Its just a great news story at poor old Kyle’s expense

I never have and never would listen to these two trash merchants. It seems like their show is nothing but mindless garbage and their station, 2DAY FM, plays commercial crap for teenage girls. Listen to Triple J or FBI radio for some decent music (except for all the hip-hop crap).
Why did Kyle and Jackie O agree to have a 12 year old on air in the first place? The mum is obviously irresponsible and uncaring but they did not have to go along with it. If allowed back, they should be forced to set some standards and procedures for their future on air stunts and not allowing minors to participate should be one of them.

I will never listen to them I find them both obnoxious and not the kind of people I want to follow in the footsteps of.
No – won’t listen to them again. Under pressure he came apart and couldn’t find compassion for that girl. His last words to her spoke volumes about that. How would he feel if that was his daughter? If he had found compassion for her he would be applauded and not reviled as he is today. He made the wrong move just by doing what people have been warning him about and now it has finally cost him and he has no one to blame but himself.

I completely agree with Rhonda. So what if he said what he did? What would you have said if you were in his position? Yes, what he said was inappropriate but it’s not entirely his fault. What about the mother? She was the one who asked her daughter if she was sexually active, knowing full well that her daughter was raped and had no choice but to confess about the rape on public radio because she was latched onto a lie detector. So yes, I think Kyle and Jackie’O should be put back on air since Kyle was not the one to blame but only said an inappropriate phrase after being shell shocked by the girl’s bombshell of a confession. Hell, I’d listen to it regularly even though I hardly did before.
Also, I think channel 10 is real cowardly for not evening sticking up for their ex-employee but just firing them because of something like that. It really shows how dependable they are.
One would think those two yoyo’s would have learned from the Russell Brand incident!

How have these people been given air time for so long? After what I heard about them on “Media Watch” last night the producers and human resource manager should have been sacked when their behaviour and comments first became apparent. With monkeys we have masquerading as politicians no wonder society’s standards and values have slipped. Is this part of multi-culturalism? Is this what accepting everyone and their devient comments means?
Kyle get your ass back on the air ASAP and back in the lime light, the mother shuold be the one who is is trouble, Kyle is not a trained proffessional and wouldn’t know how to speak to the girl , so the comment that he made i see as an attempt to move things along and inexperience in dealing with the matter of a rape in a girl so young. I don’t know why everyone reacted the way they did to this situation. We already know Kyle can be a big-mouthed idiot – what’s the big deal? Everything’s gotten way out of proportion. The whole thing is stupid. Put them back on, for goodness sake. The blame should fall entirely on the mother, that despicable witch.
I dont believe its Kyle’s fault. The girls mother is at fault here. She publicly humiliated her daughter on national radio for what?.. concert tickets? thats low. For her to get her daughter on that lie detector i wouldnt be surprised if she lied her way there. No show would let a rape victim participate in this type of competition, even the Kyle & Jackie O show. I can see them agreeing to a 14 year-old in seeing what weird and wacky things these kids get upto during sex not what it feels like to be raped.

I really think you should be blaming the mother for even thinking about putting her daughter on radio, and to think her mother was laughing at her own daughter while these questions were being asked.

I agree that the media have really made a meal of this! They are more interested in having a pop at Kyle than having any real sympathy for the girl concerned. Her mother must be mentally sick to do that to her. I was listening to the show at the time and believe Kyle was genuinely shocked and unfortunately said the first thing that popped into his head as a knee jerk reaction. Not sure why he’s being made the scapegoat for this… don’t the show’s producers vet what gets discussed at least a little? I think Australian Idol management have behaved in an appaulling and so will be flicking channels now when it’s on. Like them or not Kyle and jackie O keep me sane ona long drive to Sydney.. if they do get to air again I’ll definitely tune in.
The guy made a name for himself by taking things one step further. Unfortuntaley enough people found everything preceeding this entertaining enough to keep it all going. Thing is he’s sitting back and laughing at all the media attention that this has gained .. because that’s the only reason they did it .. and counting his money. Do I feel sorry for him ? No.

so many people want to blame the mother and forget that kyle and jackie had to allow the child on their show, the mother couldnt just show up and demand to have her child placed on air without permission of the hosts running the show.

Yes i would, it’s the producers of the show that should be copping the blame for this WHO in their right mind would let a 14 yr old girl go on air and be asked any questions. And as for the mother she needs a good kick up the butt! Yeah Kyle probably should not of said what he did,but that’s Kyle and in that situation i think they both handled the best they could.
Kyle is a person who grates against socially accepted behaviour. While he is appreciated as the villan, he is the type of person who once he has overstepped the boundaries, everyone is happy to completely remove him from their lives.

Yes I would listen to them again. Kyle was not the one who raped the girl, and he did not know she had been raped before the interview. She was 14, not 12 like many people have said, and her mother was the one who took her to the station to be on the lie detector. He could have handled the situation better, but I dont think he should be fired over it.

I think the media exaggerated the whole thing to make the radio announcers look more guilty than they were and the girl didnt sound too upset to me.They were compassionate toward her and offered to pay for counselling. The mother obviously knew this was going to happen if she took her on the show.There was a moment of silence after the girl claimed the rape and obviously noone was expecting that to come out (except mum).Kyle was obviously lost for words and carried on with her mums line of questioning which is where they were beforehand. ~listen to the whole thing here ~~

Of course i would listen to kyle and jackie O again if they came back! why not? just because they made 1 simple mistake with what happened, we are no one to judge… i was listening that day and you could tell no one could believe what was happening, it’s not kyle and jackie O ‘ s faulty that the 14 year old girl decided to take her to this lie detector segment, these people go through an interview and in that interview no one knew that the girl’s answer was going to be the answer she said… it the mother’s fault, she knew that her own daughter had gone through that and they didn’t tell the radio station, it’s not the hosts fault this happened, plus it seems that everone including the media are turning all this situation in something that was “planned” i’m pretty sure it wasn’t… everyone has focused this into something that is not, why not think about all those young girls that have gone through the same thing? and try and help them out, it’s somehting that society tries to not pay attention to… don’t just focus on the focus that the media doesn’t like kyle… it’s not only him at fault… geez relax! i suppose now theynow how the media is, if the medi hates someone they will do everything to take that person down, just like this section.

I would consider Kyle’s reply more from shock of learning the girl’s situation than insensitivity. Kyle’s hesitation before making the comment is proof of his shock.
Kyle is the only direct, honest and funny judge in Australian Idol. I only watch this show because of Kyle’s outrageous comments. Now that Ten decided to drop him as one of the judges, I don’t think OzIdol is worth watching.

alot of people are blaming kyle and jackie,what about the producers of the show???? why arent they taking some of the blame as well. the comments made by kyle were clearly of poor judgement,but the fact of the matter is that no-one at the station knew what response they would get.the mother of this girl has no sense of responsibilty,to shame your daughter in that way is an utter disgrace,the mother would have known that her daughter had been raped,so why subject her to this to start with.regardless of whether the mother is at her wits end,there are other ways to communicate with your children regarding sex,drugs and alcohol.so yes i would listen to kyle and jackie again,but i think if they do end up back on air they will have strict guidlines that they will have to follow,which would be a shame in a way,cause like most aussies,they call a spade a spade. these are just my personal opinions.

Good things resulted from all this! First of all Kyle and Jackie have been taught a lesson to stop acting like morons, being responsible for their own actions and talk some sense whenever they open their big mouths to listen to their own voice. Its only when they shut up that some sense came out! A big thank you to the radio’s owners. At last they have come to their senses as this show should have been axed ages ago. Each time one was unlucky enough to pass by a radio tuned to this station, it was always full of garbage. Help for the girl which was never offered by her stupid mum, obviously another Breakfast Show moron who listened to that crap each morning. Hopefully her mum learned her lesson but once an idiot, always an idiot. Finally thank you to Australian Idol for their decision. i think it’s disgusting what happened on the kyle & jackie o show. why on earth was a 14 year old girl allowed on the radio to be interrogated by her mother about her sex life on radio? it would’ve been absolutely humiliating for that poor girl. if my mum ever tried anything like that with me, especially knowing that i had been assaulted, i would be absolutely horrified. kyle & jackie o should’ve seen that what they were doing was morally wrong to begin with and the way they handled it wasnt much better. however, i think the minors mother should have to face up to the consequences too. after all, she’s the one who phoned in just to win some tickets.
The event that occurred was by no means Kyles fault. the mother asked the girl who was on a lie detector and the mother asked “have u ever had s**?” the girl clearly said “Mum i told you, i was raped when i was twelve.”. The Kyle and Jackie O show have not got the seven second delay so they had no prior knowledge of the question or the response. The mother was however asking the questions and she should be the one at the centre of all this. Kyles response of “right…have you had any other experiences?” was not the right thing to say and yes he handled to situation poorly but the fact remains that it was the mother that asked the question.
I have never listened to the show however i would not hesitate listening to it again.

Kyle was in NZ when all this happened. He was stumped when the girl revealed she had been raped. While his reply was a stupid comment, he also admited that he didnt make a smart comment. But whats done is dont. Sacking kyle doesnt change the fact that the little girl got raped. If you listed to the entire audio of the show you will understand the 2dayfm host had no idea the daughter had been raped. The mother wanted to bring her daughter on a lie detector because she beleived she was sexually active. The daughter was sneaking out of the house after midnight and the cops had to bring her home at 2am saying that she was hanging out in the trainstation with boys that is why the mother wanted to put her on the lie detector.
Its all blown out of proportion, the host has nothing to do with it. I would listed to kyle and jackio when they come back, they have my support.
Love them!! Hatre them!! Love listening to their controversy even if i hate it. I argue with them all the time but what I love is they are for the moment, live and not contrived. You never know what to expect. I have tried to listen to other stations and their pre rehearsed jokes are only funny to them. My opinion is if you don’t like them don’t listen to them but let the rest of us have a choice.
As far as I’m concerned that 14year old girl was betrayed by every adult involved from the mother to the presenters, to the producers, to the person operating the lie detector. Obviously none of them thought they had a duty of care to that young girl. Sadly it is also a reflection of the kind of society we are when we think it’s ok to degrade and humiliate a 14 year old on a National Radio Station.

I do listen to them whenever i happen to pass by their radio station and their on. I think it’s been blown up into a huge circus. I personally didn’t hear the whole thing but yes, Kyle gets over the top sometimes and says things that might offend and annoy people but I think that’s part of what made him what he is now love him or hate him. There’s more to him than what has been said and yeah shouldn’t the actual radio station be looked at coz they would have pre-taped all this whoever gave it the green light should be questioned too. I have never listened to Kyle and Jackie O – the attempts I have made have made my stomach turn. equally with Kyle on Australian Idol. It is apparent when I cringingly watch him in that show and the trite comments he makes that Marcia Hines is barely tolerating his vacuous, arrogant, comments that show absolutely no insight. He has positioned himself as the broadcasting bully and now it’s backfired on him. I am not a fan of Kyle and I do not listen to the Kyle and Jacki O show. However, I believe that what happened is not entirely Kyle’s fault. For a start he is not a trained counsellor and therefore would not have the ability to think on his feet in that situation as a counsellor. Instead he was left to try and deal with answers that he was unprepared for!
Did he handle it badly? Of course he did but so would all of us untrained people.
As a mother of a daughter who was sexually abused when she was young I cannot help but feel that the mother of this child has to accept a lot of responsibility for what happened. Did she seek counselling for her daughter when she found out about it or did she just leave her to try to emotionally deal with all the feelings that the rape left her with.I would never dream of putting my teenage daughter through something like that. We are supposed to love our children unconditionally and support them. I do not believe this mother supported her child, but instead put her in a more serious emotional situation, and all so she could find out if she had been sexually active.
Also I believe the radio station has to accept some responsibility for this, after-all, there is someone that is either pushing for these things to take place or authorising them to happen.

I think that there is a big problem in Australia with ‘Shock Jocks’. We didn’t invent the concept we basically stole it from the Americans. The problem is that in Australia we have no freedom of speech and if any person in media makes a statement that not all people agree with then there career is over. As a result of this we have become very sensitive. Australians are supposed to have senses of humour but our media suggests that we are a group of poltically correct hypersensitive whiners, who’d rather destroy a person’s career then be made to feel even the slight discomfort.
I really hate modern Aussie comedians, their brand of non-offensive dull jokes are worn out. We have lost ‘The Chaser’, we never had good radio and soon our TVs will be wall to wall ‘Rove’.
I know this is dancing around the question, I personally hate Kyle Sandilands, he is an unfunny little scrotum. That said I will still defend his right to say whatever he likes on the radio. I would not listen to him but I think he deserves his job back on ethics.
We need unafraid people in the media, to take shots at politicians, news presenters and celebrities. If we lose all of them then we are sumbiting ourselves to a kind of sick propaganda were we can’t say funny things if they offend and we can’t say true things because they might offend too. If you don’t like it don’t listen, But don’t take away the right of human expression.

Kyle obviously didn’t know that the girl had been raped, her mother did. Which brings me to what I keep saying over and over again, why isn’t the MOTHER receiving any of the blame? She was the one that put her daughter on a radio show to take a lie detector test by untrained radio jockeys that are complete idiots regardless of what they are doing. The girl’s mother knew she had been raped and the fact that the girl broke down on national radio and said it proves that her mother has not given her the support that she needed. It is common for young girls and boys to rebel even the perfect child rebels at some point. If she’s having sex at 14 then maybe she isn’t getting enough love at home or is suffering from peer pressure. You don’t take your 14 year old daughter on a radio station to find out if she’s sexually active. That’s just wrong! What happened to privacy? I stopped listening to them a long time ago, because i got sick of their stunts and antics….the only reason i used to like them was because of the music, but they barely even play any anymore, and if they do, its miley cyrus…

I would definately listen to the show again…infact I cant believe Kyle and Jackie 0 have been taken off air and I cant wait for then to return. I think the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. The mother is the one who should be taking the fall for what played out on air. She should have phrased the question differently to avoid the young girl felling the need to reveal that she was a victim of rape on live radio. There is no way Kyle or Jackie could have known about the incident before the segment unless they were told by the mother, or even the girl if she had concerns (I mean come on, if you have listened to the show before then you know what you are in for if you get called onto the lie detector). And everyone saying that the girl was clearly distressed and vocalised that she didnt want to take part in the segment should listen to the whole segment properly as they would realise that she had already answered a question which shows that she was willing to answer…but of course before the segment you would be nervous, that normal! If I were in her situation and really didnt want to go through with the segment I would have refused to answer the questions and I’m sure my mother (first of all would never put me through something like that) would have the decency and respect for me to not push on with the questions.
Yes Kyle’s comment afterwards was insensitive but is being insensitive really a crime?Because thats how it is being treated. I can understand that being in a situation as awkward as that would be hard to bring back into control and to be honest I think he was trying to steer the question back to what the mother meant by her question. I sympathise with Kyle as I have put my foot in it in many awkward moments…although none of them were ever in broadcast to the public.
And to all the people so quick to jump up and say that the show is rubbish and Kyle should have been fired long ago – they are the number one rating breakfast show in Sydney and have been for a while, so obviously people are listneing and do love the show – shock jocks and pushing the boundaries of entertainment and all! It was this team that brought 2dayfm back into the spotlight for breakfast radio following the retirement of the morning crew. Times have changed since the morning crew were on air and I think that the Kyle and Jackie O show is a modern show that fits with the times. If you want to listen to something drab in the morning tune into another station, which just bombard you with small talk and lame competitions. If you want to listen to a couple of blokes on the radio that laugh at their own jokes and make fun of their co-host, then I can also recommend a station for that. I have listened to Kyle and Jackie since they hosted the Top 30 and love the entertainment that they offer their listeners.

Some of the comments above are so misinformed. The girl was 14 not 12 when interviewed. Both her and her idiotic mother agreed to the interview. People putting themselves forward for the show know that it is controversial. If they have no idea, then it’s a bit like being on the Jerry Springer Show and finding out that your partner has cheated on you – and being surprised??? If you listen closely to the interview, Kyle and Jackie O were very silent and after some time, Kyle, like a lot of men, blurted a very inappropriate comment. The difference between men and women are that men think very black and white and say the wrong thing straight up, whereas women mostly say nothing and then think of an appropriate comment 1/2 hour later. I feel that the mother has a duty to protect her daughter, and she knew that she was putting her daughter in a very vulnerable position. Kyle and Jackie had no idea of the outcome of the question as was requested by the girl’s mother. About time people were held responsible for their own actions, ie mother (daughter is a minor and will regret this for the rest of her life – or sell it for a million bucks later on). Having worked in the radio industry myself, I am aware that Kyle and Jackie should have used the 7 second delay “dump” button to avoid such things going to air. I’ve never been a big fan of the pair, but feel the biggest problem was the 14 year old’s mother who actually asked her daughter these questions on air for entertainment value. I don’t necessarily believe Kyle and Jackie should be sacked, and I have read comments from Australian Idol viewers that they refuse to watch the show (ratings are down) since Kyle was sacked, perhaps the best thing Channel 10 could do (for ratings) is bring him back!
Everybody knows what Kyle and Jackie O are like on-air, why is everyone complaining only NOW after years of their show doing these same sort of things!? Sponsors of the show are pulling out because of the media beat-up, nothing to do with Kyle and Jackie O. I believe that if you don’t like the show, then don’t listen… perhaps Kyle is right, the best thing to come out of this incident is now that a 14 year old victim is getting help and counselling that she otherwise would not be getting.
I would as they are kind of funny. I heard that it is Kyle who normally stops segments. he was in New Zealand broadcasting over so Jackie was in control of the switch and she didn’t really know what to do so she let it go. Kyle was stupid to say what he did but he regrets it. i think!!!
