Haiti Earthquake – How can you help?
Yesterday afternoon, the island nation of Haiti was struck by an earthquake that measured 7.0 on the Richter scale, centred 10 miles west of the capital Port-au-Prince. The quake caused wide scale damage and devastation, levelling schools and hospitals. Thousands are either dead, missing or trapped under debris; the death toll is currently estimated at over 100,000.
Amid the pain and suffering however, there are stories of amazing escapes and miracles emerging. It has been confirmed that a QLD couple, living in Haiti, have been reported as safe. But the risk of disease spreading is increasing with Haiti’s Prime Minister appealing to the world for urgent assistance. The Australian and New Zealand governments are currently working on aid plans, with aid agencies mobilising.
At times like this, it is important that the community join forces to offer support.
On Answers, we form a community of collective knowledge- but in the real world, together, we create a collective bound together by one thing: humanity, and the ability to endure. And in times like these, it’s important to remember that, and to help others persevere.
According to the Associated Press, “it was clear from a tour of the capital that tens of thousands of people had lost their homes and that many had perished. Many buildings in Haiti are flimsy and dangerous even under normal conditions.”

We can give up the money for our cofee, lunch, beer in the pub… we don’t need to be rich, just a few dollars will make the difference IF EVERYBODY gives, it will add… how much can you spare? a movie ticket ($12.00) a beer ($5.00) a bottle of wine($15.00), use that money for help someone, you will feel better. At work raise funds and send to any aid agency, put the receipt in the intranet!… If everyone at work or family and friends, gives a dollar, imagine how much will be at the end!
I totally agree Lyz, but i would also love to see some big Lotto winners and very wealthy millionaires/ billionaires offer some big “donations”. Wealth is not my priority in life. Health and happiness is. I really wish i could get a big Lotto win, because i wouldn’t hesitate in helping others and also donate $20m out of $40m to Haiti. I am serious. I care about others. “Giving” to others, who are in desperate need, is very gratifying. Far too many wealthy people are so “greedy”, they don’t even spare a thought for those less fortunate. Very sad!

I feel so bad for everyone! If you are making donations, use http://www.mercycorps.org/supporters/kongregate. They will match all donations, doubling their efforts!
If with ours little support makes the big difference of the victims lives why not to support them.
is one of our major banks taking donations for Haiti?
i am total agree with all you guys, and also agree that every little donation will make in the end big amount, but how can i be sure that the big money will go to the one those who need help, curruption these days makes everyone scare to donate, its not like all wealthy ppl are bad or they does’ntlike to donate, but no one is sure if the money will be on right place after, i rather give money straight to ppl in thier hands who i see they need rather than donating in these firms which i never trust. may be i am wrong but this is my experience with some firms.
Can’t donate a lot as I don’t have a lot but as stated above evry little bit counts. A lot of ‘little bits’ can make quite a big bit if everyone helps out in anyway possible. I don’t know how much of my donation wil go to the actual cause but I am desperate to help out in some way and I do not know another way to get my money to the people over there that need it.
i want to donate but can anyone give me the name of an organisation that is in this for the victims and can give some tangible believable evidence that im not just filling their coffers and helping someone get fatter while my money doesnt even leave the country
I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard My people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin,
My hand will save.
I who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear My light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have born my peoples pain.
I have wept for love of them, They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
Give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak My word to them,
Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them,
My hand will save
Finest bread I will provide,
Till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give My life to them,
Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my heart.
If we cant donate, please pray

REST IN PEACE and best of luck to those who are alive and well
I would like to donate, but i will certainly not do so with the miserable banks taking 3 per cent off the top
with the banks taking 3 per cent. it just shows to the people of australia, how low the banks of australia have sunk, i can remember when they were held in high regard. and an event such as this shows what the banks are really like with their disgusting rip off
I am of the same mind, the thing that stopped me from donating to the Haiti disaster was the announcement by the banks that they would be taking 3 per from the top of donations to cover their costs. i will not donate to the filth of australian banking
Can we donate clothes or anythign else besides money?
I feel so many would dontate but are sceptical as to if the money will actually get to the needy. if the Govt would advise after providing facts that an organization they have checked out was absolutely credible I feel many would give and give.
Very easy to donate. In every town has organizations you can donate. I am only a pensioner but I m glad I can make donations. Every little bit helps. $100 is made up of one dollar coins.
” I need your help urgently – as soon as possible! I work for a hospital – Sacre Coeur in Milot, 75 miles North of Port au Prince. We were not damaged. We have room for 100 patients,we have over 20 Haitian doctors onsite including a medical trauma team and an orthopedic team arriving today. Helicopters can land very close to us, only ONE landed yesterday with 4 patients! People are dying in the streets AND in the hospitals in Port au Prince. We have a full-service hospital with two ORs and are NOT being utilized. We have an ambulance ready. When our staff hear a helicopter they are at the field immediately to receive patients but they are not arriving!! If any of you have contacts in the media or with organisations who could potentially get the word out about our hospital and our efforts to help please, please do so! The clock is ticking and so many lives are being lost. Our website is http://www.crudem.org“
I walked into a CBA just the other day to make a donation and they did not know of a thing. This was nearly a week after the incident. HOW BL**DY dare they charge 3 % boy would I like to meet the director in a dark alley. I am taking my donation elsewhere, I cant afford much as I am on a Pension but it will ALL get to the ground. GOD BLESS EVERYONE.
Paul
It pisses me off the amount of million and billionaires are out there just SITTING on their money, while the “little” people lick us decent hard working folks are giving whatever we can to help these poor traumatised ppl. These fat cats need to pull their fingers out and HELP!!!
Why should I donate my hard earned dollars to a country that is recieving foreign aid from our government already?
We in Australia are one of the highest taxed countries in the world yet our government cant even look after our elderly, people with disabilities, or homeless, but has the money to throw at foreign countries in times of crisis.
The Australian government needs to focus on it’s own disadvantaged population first – rectify the attrocities that happen here, then it can consider funding of millions of dollars to other nations.
Maybe the good hearted citizens of Australia should put there donations directly into non government funded community organisations within there local suburbs to help out Australians in need first.
I feel for the haitains in their time of need, but there are alot of other countries in the world that can also help – but do not.
why are Australians always expected to fund these countries in times of crisis?
Put your beer / coffee money in the hand of your local senior citizen, coz these are the people who faught for your rights and freedom in wars gone by, yet are still being screwed by our government. you try and live on the pension, especially if your medical costs equate to half of the money you recieve.
Focus on the problems at home before sending your money overseas!
Well if Australia stopped wasting money on bringing, and wining/dining so-called princes to visit, & ceased blowing up funds in fire-work displays we would have a lot more to donate.
I also like other people in Australia would like to donate, however im under 18 years of age and i tried donating through the unicef organisation but it says that i need to be over 18 to donate. I’ve read all the comments on this page and found out that some doesnt even want to donate and states that the government is wasting money on those poor disadvantage people in Haiti, I think that since we live in a country where technology is vast and that we have centres such as centerlink to give us money, why not help those who are less fortunate who doesnt even have proper meals everyday. Nor medicine, clothes and a house to live in.
well its a fine line isnt it yes we do need to help our own but their is help out their if sourced for the elderly , disabled ,and the homeless .we need to look at the life style we have and how we would feel if we were struck by a disaster of this catagory through no fault of our own,so dont feel bad about donating even a little, then you could start a charity at home here to help our people in need ?
Yes, I believe our goverment should do more for the elderly and disability, as I have both of them. However, giving a little coffee money to show some support to people in disaster is a good deed… for your later generations. I was thinking of going to bank to donate 2morrow, but that’s sick if they takes % off the donation, I will have to find a another org that trust-worthy.
the problem with the world today is that people are to greedy. We all have aquaintences and family who are doing it both hard and easy.It does amaze me that the banks, the govt, the landlords and wealthy all scarpper when theres trouble but first in line to collect when theres a freeby or hand out.Greedy Greedy Greedy.Im 54 years of age and are still waiting to see a herse with suitcases on top of the coffin. Take a look at yourselves, one day it might be you or a member of your family who needs a hand. Greedy, greedy, greedy.
does anyone know who i can donate clothes and toys to?
Even I found a few dollars from my first little casual job in 25 years of being out of work. A little goes a long way.
really sad whats happened over there i hope that they will be able to regain their lives again by having faith in other people to help out and that they dont have to go through this crisis again
