Eat Zee Whagon Wheel!

If you could reinvent Arnott’s classic snack, the Wagon Wheel, what would you change and why?
- Yahoo!7 Australia Answers Team

Do you remember this TV advertisement?

Wagon Wheels were one of the most iconic snack foods for Australians growing up in the 80′s and 90′s. The TV ad above, along with several others were recited over and over by kids across the country – I’m fairly sure there was one with iguanas, snails or sardines as well, does anyone else remember them too?

Recently, my fiancé and I were travelling in country NSW and came across Wagon Wheels in one of the service stations we stopped at. Extremely excited, they were quickly purchased and consumed. They tasted just as we remembered them, it literally was a jolt back to our childhoods.

Check out the history of the Wagon Wheel below:

Arnott’s product innovation team have been hard at work figuring out ways to reinvent the classic snack. Perhaps you can lend them a hand?

  1. you can see from the answers that the majority of comments have addressed perceptions of the diminishing size of the WW. has net weight changed over the years ?
calls for variety in flavours may be problematic from a production and marketing point of view but none-the-less worth examining in detail.
from a personal pint of view, the little wagon wheels put up as biscuits are cute and tasty – perhaps these might be a vector for increase of variety.
loved the History video, the STFU ‘copter was very now. segments of this could be well used in marketing WWs i think.
the brand owners need to realise australian sensitivities about brand ownership are often fuelled by ( possibly inaccurate ? ) perceptions as to where items are produced and where the benefits go. so, are WWs still made in oz ? if so, perhaps this needs to get a mention in promotion. happy to discuss.
ps i remember when westons first put the WW on the market and the kid in the cowboy outfit used in the first ads !

  4. I stopped buying Wagon Wheels because the taste changed and they diminished in size. I wouldn’t care so much about their reduced size (which was a unique appeal) if the quality of the ingredients were better. I am also the type to feel sentimental when I see a W.W. sitting on the lolly shelf, but I’ll choose something that tastes better.

  6. I LOVED wagon wheels when I was a kid. (Still do) but I disagree with making them smaller or snack size. the biggest buzz for me was that were the SAME SIZE as a sandwich! They were HUGE in a small kids hand! And it was much easier for my mother to say “Just one!” and for me to accept that I was only allowed one.
I dont like the wrapper. I dont like the colours. It might be green and gold for australia but lets face it, in a kids eyes the only things that are GREEN are VEGETABLES!!! I’d much rather a see through wrapper or at least a lifelike picture of whats IN the wrapper! And yes, they do taste different now…I thought it was my grown up taste buds…but if everyones saying the same thing….maybe go back to real jam instead of artificial jam? Its chocolate, its meant to be decadent and full of sugar=consumers choice. Yum!

  7. Would someone please find an origional package for the western wagon wheels showing the weight in imperial measurments and settle this debate once and for all….before Arnotts try to continue to try and hoodwink us…they are probably hoping that someone doesn’t find one… the fact is that the origional Weston’s Wagon Wheel in the 60′s was larger than the present one…
