Safer Internet Day is a major annual event, designed to promote safer and more responsible use of Internet and mobile devices among young people.

In 2012, Safer Internet Day’s central theme is to endorse good communication between all generations. “Every one of you, from age 7 to 77, from young computer whizz to old-fashioned granddad, and of course parents, teachers, institutions and anyone else out there in world of the internet can help to develop safer use of the internet for children and for all.”

This year, Yahoo! Answers Community Managers from across the world, are sharing their own tips for you and your loved ones when browsing the Internet.

For Australians, today is ‘Go Home On Time Day‘!

An initiative started by the Australia Institute, ‘Go Home On Time Day’ has been running for three years now and gathering quite a bit of support from employers and workers alike. Employers benefit from having a refreshed team with focus and workers get to spend more time doing the things they enjoy or spending time with loved ones. It’s win-win situation for both sides.

New research found more than half of all full-time workers regularly worked unpaid overtime, and one in four put in a working week of 50 hours or more.

Sydney University’s Workplace Research Centre tracked more than 8000 employees across the country over five years, working in a broad cross section of white-and blue-collar industries.

The findings appear to be backed up by a separate study set to be released today by the commercial property multinational company Regus. Its global survey of 12,000 white-collar workers found 49 per cent of Australians are now putting in between nine and 11 hours every day, compared to 38 per cent of workers globally. Only 13 per cent of Australian workers said they never took work home.

In December 1996, the UN proclaimed the 21st of November to be World Television Day, in recognition of “the increasing impact television has on decision-making by alerting world attention to conflicts and threats to peace and security and its potential role in sharpening the focus on other major issues, including economic and social issues.”

At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants known as Mo Bros then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache and along the way raise as much money and awareness about male health issues as possible.

Today is World Scleroderma Day!

What is “scleroderma” I hear you ask?

jlcrit describes scleroderma in the following way:
“Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease of the connective tissue. Autoimmune diseases are illnesses which occur when the body’s tissues are attacked by its own immune system. Scleroderma is characterised by the formation of scar tissue (fibrosis) in the skin and organs of the body. This leads to thickness and firmness of involved areas. Scleroderma is also referred to as systemic sclerosis.”

Patrick elaborates further with:
“Scleroderma is called both a rheumatic disease and a connective tissue disease. The term rheumatic disease refers to a group of conditions characterised by inflammation and/or pain in the muscles, joints, or fibrous tissue. A connective tissue disease is one that affects tissues such as skin, tendons, and cartilage.

An individual with scleroderma may develop either a localised or a systemic form of the disease. Localised scleroderma usually affects only the skin on the hands and face. Systemic scleroderma, however, affects the connective tissue in many parts of the body, including the skin, the esophagus, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, kidneys, heart, and other internal organs. It is unusual for localised scleroderma to progress to the systemic form.”

Scleroderma comes in different types and some people may be more afflicted than others. I myself was diagnosed with limited scleroderma when I was just 10 years old, but I have a mild form, although it is monitored regularly for any changes.

Whilst I am one of the lucky ones, others are not and the disease can take over their bodies, this is called diffuse scleroderma. It can lead to other related illnesses with organs and tissues, making everyday activities extremely painful. According to Scleroderma Australia, there are over 5,000 people currently living with disease within Australia.
